When we tend gardens, we deal in miracles. šæāØšā
ā
This tending is often referred to as āmaintenance,ā a rather reductive term that evokes to-do lists and mindless drudgery while failing to capture a larger, more beautiful truth: as gardeners, we do nothing less than shepard the living generosities of the Earth. Weāre familiar with the gardenās rewards: nourishing food to share with friends, fragrant bouquets for the kitchen counter, stronger ecosystems and communities. But what about the process of attaining such plentyāif we arenāt delighting in the moments along the way, weāre missing out. Bearing witness as a bee pollinates your plant can be as joyful as making zucchini bread; weeding can be meditation; and even as the deer nibble our hostas, we can marvel at them and learn. So as society grapples with challenges that seem to demand more and more attention and concern, letās not surrender a single experience of wonder, understanding, pleasure, or peace. Letās instead grow and tend exuberantly, together.ā
