I have this Big Leaf Maple (I think) tree in my front yard and while it is a beautiful tree, it is the bane of my existence for about 9mo of every year. I’m on a hill so the front yard is moderately steep, but the roots of this tree are insane. I know I can’t cover them with soil. There’s mainly just scraggly grass and unappealing non-flowering weeds, and I have to weed whack the entire thing.

Is there anything I CAN plant that will be visually appealing and low maintenance?

wait, can’t cover with soil? Why not, is that bad for the tree? Also can’t you dig out bits from in between those roots maybe?

You need plugs of native (part) shade plants to stick in-between tree roots. Where are you?

What’s the light like? If it’s shady like it looks in the image, and the soil is moist enough, you could put in a bunch of ferns and whatever other woodland species are native to the area.

  4. A couple native shade plants between the roots to give a splash of color, then mulch the rest out to the dripline. No more visible roots, and no more erosion when it heavily rains.
