  1. Ben’s comment at the end about changed plans bringing new opportunities gave me goosebumps. What a bright boy! We just built a huge sandbox for the grandkids and my plans changed a million times about the location. I wanted to make sure it was right before he leveled the ground and filled it! So your conversation with Jeremiah was cracking me up. 😊

  2. Haha ❤ 😂seeing your hubby dance with the beds teasing you was hilarious 😂 thanks for the laugh, Jeremiah! Ya, I would have moved the small bed too 😉

  3. My mind went straight to the 3 stooges cartoons with yall deciding the bed especially when yall were standing in them😂😂😂.love yall God Bless

  4. I hope you show a video of the process of filling all of them. I enjoy figuring out the flow of the walkways, and make sure that the sun is hitting the plants without allowing other plants to overshadowing other growing plants, etc. It is looking good! 🙂

  5. Your family’s playful banter and teamwork truly make gardening feel like a joyful adventure, thank you for sharing these heartwarming moments! Ben’s wisdom about leaving room for change is such a beautiful reminder to embrace life’s surprises. Wishing you all the joy as you create your little slice of paradise together! 🌿❤

  6. This little space will be beautiful ♥
However, mowing between those beds might be tricky. I am doing a very similar raised bed garden right now as well and I am laying a weed fabric on the ground and just cutting the bed bottoms out so that there is a contact with native soil. I will then cover the walkways with wood chips. Previously I had grass walkways and it was a pain to mow.

  7. What a smart insightful son you have raised!
Secret confession: don’t tell anyone, but one of my degrees is in Landscape Design and I have done the exact same thing a million times but I didn’t have a patient family standing around watching me change my mind. I had a very expensive installation crew standing around smiling because they were being paid to do absolutely nothing while I was indecisive. I still have nightmares about one backyard that I made a wrong decision because I was being pressed for time. I was fresh out of school, about 8 months into owning my own design firm when I made a ghastly mistake. Fortunately, I moved out of state and lost touch with the homeowner so they couldn’t sue me. Yeah, it was THAT BAD. Actually, it wasn’t my fault. My design originally was perfect, BUT there was a citrus orchard in the area that was being turned into a housing development. The home owner got a great deal on 2 full grown citrus trees with free planting included!!! The orange tree was planted where I had already designed a citrus tree to go. However, when they went to put the grapefruit tree in, they ran into a water main!😮 so they moved it over 4 feet. (Remember that these were full grown trees with a 5 foot wide root ball and this was a normal size suburban backyard) When I showed up at the job site the next week and saw the grapefruit tree halfway into where the in-ground swimming pool was supposed to be built in phase 2 of this landscape it was too late to move the tree and there was no other place for the pool. So I took a deep breath and said “Oh!!! No problem! We will just redesign the pool as a free form style and the tree will live on a peninsula that juts into the pool and we will move the jacuzzi over to the other end and the pool will sort of look like a jigsaw puzzle piece. I did not know that a freeform pool cost twice as much to build as a straight rectangle pool does, or that cleaning the pool around the peninsula would be difficult and require a special vacuum that costs much more. I did not know that when they dug up the grapefruit tree, they had trimmed its root ball from a 20 foot root ball to a 5 foot root ball and never having owned a grapefruit tree, I did not know how much litter that it was going to drop into the pool. I learned all these details a few years later after I had already moved away, and I have just felt horrified ever since. 40 years later, I still have nightmares about the mistakes in that design.
So when you see that something isn’t right with your design, it’s a great thing to take the time and think it through and rethink it and rethink it, until you know you’ve got it right. It’s so much easier to fix a mistake in the design phase than when you are in the of building it. After I realized how bad my pool design was, I added a new step to my design process, where I use a squirt bottle of diatomaceous earth to outline all of my beds and structures on the exact places they will go to make sure everything fits just right and of course I have the utility companies mark the underground utilities before I even start the design. I knew that the water line was there and I had purposely not put any trees or shrubs near it. But the grapefruit tree was not part of my design and the company that planted the tree never looked at my design. What we had there, was a major failure to communicate! I just pray that the swimming pool contractor had the integrity to tell the homeowner that the design for the pool was not feasible on many levels.
