hi r/containergardening! i just planted this container this morning, but was wondering if its looking too crowded? or if you have any other tips as i learn more about gardening!
around 40” x 10” x 15”, east facing—gets morning sun into early afternoon. dry. 7A
planted: 4 juliet tomatoes, 2 lettuce leaf basils, 7 marigolds (and lavender on the side)
going to get some stakes for the tomatoes today too! my package was supposed to come with a second bed the same size where i’d put 2 strawberries, some bee balm, 2 rosemary, and more marigolds… for now i guess i have to wait 😭

Yes, way too crowded. Gardening beginners often make the mistake of fitting the container or raised bed with whatever fits at the time of planting, not considering the size the plant will be if healthy when it is mature.
For example, Juliet’s can grow to be 4-8 feet tall. For a planter box that isn’t quite 4’ long, you would be pushing it by trying to squeeze 2 plants in a container that size.
Lavender is a spreader. I grew some in a window box indoors over the winter, and what started as two sprigs now fills the entire box.
Basically, what you have planted in this box should realistically be spread between 3 boxes of this size.
My piece of advice would to research all mature plant sizes for the specific variety of the plant you are growing and go from there. 🙂
I would take the lavender out, or do you mean the lavender is in the pot separate?
