It’s spring in my Pennsylvania zone 6b garden and it’s time to get outside to work in the landscape! Flowers are blooming, trees are budding, and I am ready to share tips for all gardeners! In this YouTube Video, I share how to direct sow seeks in the landscape, plant an evergreen in a planter for our deck, and give an update on the progress of our new garden flower bed in our front yard. This gained bed will be full of evergreens, shrubs, annuals, perennials, and trees and will be over 100 feet long! Also, this flower bed will tie into our foundation garden bed and will enhance curb appeal! Having this garden designed my a landscape professional was an amazing experience and I can’t wait to share the progress we have made on cutting in this new flower bed! Landscape design is ever changing, and it’s fun as a Gardner to stretch my cottage garden vision! This year, I am focusing on adding evergreens for optimum impact and to add winter interest. Let’s get out in the garden, and get to planting, digging, and removing plants together.

Hi, welcome back to my garden. My name is Jen and I have a fun video for you today. The first thing that we’re going to tackle is we are going to do a little bit of winter sewing in the middle of spring. And yes, I’ll explain why I’m going to be winter sewing in the middle of spring. It might sound a little weird, but trust me, it’s going to be just fine. We’re going to plant up a little conifer tree in a container for my deck. We’re going to direct sew some notorium seeds out in the landscape. and then we’re gonna head to the front yard where I’m going to share an update on how our new garden bed is progressing. Let’s go ahead and get started. I know what you’re thinking. Why would I be using the winter sewing method in the middle of spring? Well, you can use this method anytime you want. You don’t have to do this method just in the winter time. All I’m doing is basically creating little green houses for my seedlings. So instead of having the seeds sit and wait until the weather warms up to germinate, they’re going to germinate right away. I decided in all four containers I’m going to grow the same plant. I’m going to try the hissip seed. Now, these seeds are very, very fine and they want to be direct sewn right on top of the soil and not be pressed in or buried under any soil because these need light to [Music] germinate. I’m going to go ahead and link my winter sewing video down below so you can see full and complete steps on how to do this process. [Music] In my opinion, the best tape to use is a painters tape because it is very easy to take off the jug when it’s time to actually plant your seedlings out into the landscape. [Music] I’m going to add these four containers to my collection that I have on the upper deck that gets full and complete sun. [Music] I bought this blue spruce a couple of weeks ago and it is so adorable. It’s only, I believe, a 4in pot and it is so cute. But this is going to add a lot of interest into a container. So, I have an old hanging basket that I’m converting into a regular planter. And you can see that I’m putting a whole bunch of garden debris in the bottom of the container. And that’s just because I don’t need this whole container filled with potting soil right away. [Music] Now, I took the evergreen out of its little potting container and I’m putting it in the big container and I’m packing soil all around it. This is a great hack that you can use. You can just pull that little container out and plop your plant right in and it has the perfect little home where it can start to grow. [Music] You got it all inside of [Music] you. And when you dance, I’m in the [Music] making. So, I found some ntorium seeds from last year, and I did try to plant these last year, but they did not take. First thing you do is you soak the seeds and then you go ahead and plant them one inch deep. Even though I did not have success last year growing these, I’m going to try again this year because I already have the seed packets and I just want to use what I have. [Music] [Music] I think this evergreen is just so adorable. I love it. You have a whole bunch of the ntorium seeds that are still soaking. And I think I’m going to plant them right over here in this upper flower bed. I’m planting these 1 in deep as I did in the container on the deck. I am also putting more than one seed in each hole. Hopefully, they will take this time. I love the look of notorium in the landscape. I think it is just so beautiful and such a cottage vibe. [Music] And if you are finding this content helpful and enjoyable to watch, please feel free to share this video with a friend. And don’t forget to hit that thumbs up button and the red subscribe button down below. Thanks. [Music] All right. Maintenance for these seeds is just to keep the ground damp until the seeds germinate and I start seeing growth. Hopefully that will happen within one to two weeks. But again, it’s nourome so it could take longer. While I was out here, I remembered that I wanted to transplant this little pink echanasia flower. I had planted it at the end of the flower bed, tucked in between the two hydrangeas, and it just was not getting enough sunlight. So, I quick popped it out of the ground, and I’m transplanting it right here. I think it’s going to get a lot more sun, and hopefully it will thrive. [Music] Now it is time to update you on our new front garden bed. Before I do, I want to repaint a line because we actually want to make the grass pathway in between the two flower beds a little bigger so the golf cart can drive [Music] through. Now, I’m making this grass pathway about one and a half to two feet wider than what it originally was. I think it’s just going to flow better and it’s going to allow more walking space. And then in the future, if we do want to have a professional come and lay some kind of a pathway down, there’s plenty of room for them to do so. [Music] [Music] So, as you can see, we are actually cutting in this flower bed. We are removing the sod. We are not doing the no till method where we lay down cardboard right on top of the grass and then we put compost on top of that and that’s what we plant in. The reason that we are digging out the sod is because this is such an uneven area. We thought it would be a good idea to cut the saw out and kind of even out the flower bed area just a little bit to make it easier for when I am walking around and planting things in this bed. [Music] And around the edge of the bed where we painted the orange line, he is digging this part out by hand to make sure that we have a semi clean edge. [Music] [Music] [Music] Right over here is the new line. So, this is all going to be golf carts. And I think that’s really important that we do have enough room here for the golf cart because it just makes sense with all the garden bed cleanup that we have. And yes, the wind toppled over my oblisk, but there’s my beautiful statement evergreen. Oh, this wind is just I don’t like the wind. It makes me mad. But here’s another view of the golf cart track. So, it’s going to go that way up and around. Hopefully, you can hear me. Hopefully, I don’t have to do a voice over for this part as well. But, uh, just to bring everybody up to speed, the garden bed is going to come all the way around this tree and it’s going to go up over to where husband stopped digging. Let me take you up there. You can see we do have the orange line repainted so we have a good guide. But all this is going to be flower bed and we’re going to have a grass path right there. Oh, this wind. Oh my gravy. I figured I would spare you listening to me trying to talk over the wind. So, this is just the portion that husband has already cut in for this new flower bed. And thank you to husband. He’s doing a fantastic job. But I’m going to go ahead and swing around and show you in a second the progress that he’s made. And the flower bed is going to go all the way down around that tree right there. And I am so excited. This is going to be an absolutely beautiful new flower bed. [Music] I hope you had as much fun watching this video as I did making this video for you. And I will see you in the next one. Bye.
