Is this a lost cause? We purchased the rolls last week and due to work only had the chance to lay it today. Now anyone in the uk will be aware we have had some incredibly hot unseasonal sun this week.

The rolls were kept in the shade and watered midweek. Suppose the question is should we just pull it up and go and buy fresh turf?

Keep it watered and give it a week – I’d imagine it’ll be looking a lot better

Drench it twice a day and it should fine

You’d be surprised what grass can come back from. Give it a week or two and see what happens.

Grass has had to put up with a lot worse than this and continues to thrive. You could supplement it with some seed.

You might be lucky, give it a liquid seaweed feed with a watering can. I put about 80ml in a 9 litre can and just walk it over once a week ( as well as the watering )

Always lay turf within 24 hours of lifting. It’s the first rule. Regardless of weather. Your turf will recover but itll look shit for ages.

It’ll bounce back. That is grass’ great survival trait, the ability to absolutely tank a drought and darkness, and still keep regrowing. Keep it well watered, but not waterlogged, and it’ll come good. It’ll just take a bit longer.

It’s not dead, it’s just starved of sunlight. It’ll look great in a few days, just keep it watered.

Thats just lack of chlorophyll from no light. You get the same look if you put a tent on it for a week. It will come back. Keep it moist every day. Post a pic in a week.

Builders layed the lawn at new house then no water until moved in 2 months later in September, looked like white sliced bread on the lawn 🙄
Had to start from scratch, would have been easier not to do anything

I wouldn’t be surprised if that survived. Keep it well watered for a few days.

Not a lost cause if it’s only a week old.
You need to allow it time to recover.

Naa I wait to buy yellow ones they’re fine

  14. ExiledWiganer

    That’ll be fine.

Just water it (sprinkler) for 30 mins, minimum, twice a day for a few weeks.

Even when it looks like its starting to come good continue to water it

It’s not laid right for starters. It is supposed to be laid like building a wall. Also, turf is to be laid 24 to 48hrs from being taken up. You never leave it in rolls, you lay it out and water it if it can’t be laid straight away.

Lack of light has caused the yellowing, it should green up just fine in the sun. Although those yellow leaves might also be a bit prone to getting burned, if you have some white garden fleece that may help if it gets fry an eg on the pavement hot.

You were provided with old grass and need to get it back to quality. Dont overfeed just plenty of water and light i.e cut back surroundings to encourage

DO NOT RIP IT UP. Contractor here, that will be 100% fine. I promise. The yellow-ish colour you see is from the grass blades not seeing sunlight for a while. That is why the edges of the rolls have remained green, because they could access the daylight. If it was yellowish from dryness that would be bad news. But yours clearly is not from dryness, as the edges arent crispy etc etc. The key with any turf is water water water. You can’t water it enough. The beating of the water droplets settle everything in place. And key the roots to the soil below. Forget a hose. Buy a cheap sprinkler and stick it on there. For a couple of hours or more every day. That turf will be fine. It’ll green up in a matter of days 👍

It’s deffo not dead. It’ll just take a few weeks longer to look good. Don’t let it dry out.

  20. Thank you everyone, it seems I will be spending alot of time over the next week or so with the hosepipe and some decent lawn food. I do now have far more hope than when I originally posted the photo. I’ll update in a week or so to let you know how it goes
