Third year since I removed my lawn and replaced with mulch, for some reason these started popping out all over this spring. I tried identifying them, but none of the results make sense. I do have a Japanese Tree Lilac close by and I am wondering if these would be from its seed pods. Any idea?

That looks like some type of primrose to me. Maybe yellow evening primrose, by your zone…

Looks like lilac to me. Might want to cut your blooms before they go to seed.

Just so you know Japenese tree lilac (Syringa reticulata) is consider “potentially invasive” in Ontario. Areas throughout the Northeastern US are starting to label the plant as invasive as more is learned about its tendencies to cause harm after escaping into natural areas. Some of these states are neighboring Ontario so I wouldn’t be surprised if the plant is also invasive there despite not having an official label yet, especially in Southern Ontario

I’m assuming the lilac is yours so ignore me if it isn’t

They should be pretty easy to pull by hand if they’ve seeded on top of a decent layer of mulch – the roots won’t be as embedded as would be in bare soil.

Be aware that if you spray poison on those, you’ll poison the big tree too
