Believe it or not, both of these are nodulosa x runyonii! The only difference is that I used a narrower an pointier leaved nodulosa, and also a plain runyonii, not runyonii ‘Topsy Turvy’ as was the case with Dark Hawk.

Dark Hawk goes by many names. It was originally named with a non-English name. It roughly translates to Dark Hawk, Darkness Power, or even Diablo Strength. So these would be the correct cultivar names for the plant. Unfortunately a seller in Australia took it upon himself to give it a new name, Dark Vader, and this name spread all over the world, and also stuck. It’s offensive to the breeder to rename a plant without his/her permission. More so in this case because the seller claimed that he got permission from the breeder, but the person who he said gave him permission wasn’t even the actual breeder (it may have been an honest mistake I suppose, but this doesn’t make it acceptable). So if you do have this plant, please try not to use this illegitimate name, however “catchy” it might be.

I always thought that Echeveria Dark Vader was the hybrid Echeveria runyonii Topsy Turvy and Echeveria Black Knight (or Echeveria affinis I am not sure).
