I do daily lily beetle checks and just pick them off and crush them.

Well, when they’re actually there. You need to pop some gloves on and crush them with your fingers and use a kitchen towel to wipe away and eggs.
Then you’ve got two options . You can either spray your lilies with neem oil or G4 Grazers lily beetle spray. Neem oil will kill them and their eggs , it’s stinky and horrible and isn’t great fun . G4 Grazers lily beetle spray is pretty good and doesn’t kill any wildlife. It makes the lilies unappealing to the beetles and they won’t touch em. But if they’re already there you need to do daily searches and kill them first.
I don’t like killing things but sometimes you have to in gardening especially with those bastards.

😟 That’s so frustrating!

You have to sneak up to them ninja style. Once they sense danger, they let themselves fall off the leaf and then you can’t see them as they always seem to land upside down. I hate them. The grubs are even worse… disgusting things.

I gave up trying to control them a few years ago. Bought some amazing Fritilaria bulbs last year. All eaten within days of coming up😩

Kill them all. Look out for their eggs under the leaves and squish these too. Their babies (little fat maggot things) excrete black gunk around themselves and look like little pieces of poo. Squish them.
Don’t forget to look under every leaf as they are sneaky little things. It’s a shame since they are obviously really well adapted for eating lillies and the adult is very pretty. But, if you want to see any lily flowers you know what you need to do…get squishing.

They decimated mine last year so I’m on the ball this year. Every time I see one I squash it with a peg. I’m checking several times a day.

Put a little bowl, or a piece of paper below the lily before checking the plant , as with the slightest movement they drop off. If you’ve killed one bear in mind there’s probably another as they’re always in pairs. You can use prevanto spray on the leaves and add coffee grounds to the mulch to try to deter them, but frequent checks (and squishes) are the best prevention

Humping, they’re always humping

The birds in my garden enjoy me flicking them off towards the patio and having their snack.
Especially the blackbirds!
But at peak beetle season it’s a minimum hourly task.

Bloody lily beetles, I use a small sauce pot and plant tag to remove them, then feed them to my Venus fly traps which get a real boost! 😂

Once I found out that lilies are toxic to cats, I stopped growing them, but before then, these red beetles were the bane of my life ( along with slugs). I used to flick them off and stamp on them ( too squeamish to squash in my fingers …)
