I used to have one bunch in a smaller pot, but they didn't seem to like that so I repotted them in a bigger pot a few months ago and split them into three. They were looking good for a while but now they just won't stand up and they Have a lot of dried dead ones. Are they still too crowded?

Mine are new growth and they look like these, maybe that’s how they grow?
How often do you prune them? In my experience, chives start getting woodier and floppier as they age. I basically treat my chives as a perpetual salad, and chop off a good chunk like clockwork every week. They’re growing vigorously and are upright.
I think they are leggy because they want more light. Or possibly the nutrient balance in the soil is not how they prefer. Would consider doing a soil test. My inground chives propagated themselves all over the lawn in hard clay soil without me lifting a finger. My potted (read: babied) indoor chives in basically humus do what yours are doing. Some are a bit better (thicker and stronger) where I added the most light but not much.
I ended up repotting the chives and separating them into several smaller bunches. I cut them down to a few inches so it will all be new stuff. Hopefully this works!
Check to see if they aren’t infected with aphids, tiny black or green insects.
As with all herbs, you need to harvest them regularly to keep them bushy.
Another thing, chives don’t like to be disturbed when they are growing. It’s fine to move them from a small pot to a larger one but avoid dividing them.
You can try cutting them to ground level adding some fresh compost to feed them as they regrow.
