In 1921, plant breeder John Hershey began a quiet experiment in Downingtown, Pennsylvania: he planted a food forest designed to feed people and regenerate soil—without the need for irrigation or fertilizer.
A century later, many of those trees are still thriving.
Grafted nut trees, prolific persimmons, and resilient mulberries continue to grow in suburban neighborhoods—largely forgotten, yet still producing food with no maintenance.
This is more than a story about one man’s legacy. It’s living proof that perennial agroforestry systems can withstand the test of time and offer solutions to today’s most pressing food and climate challenges.
➤ What if more neighborhoods were built like this?
➤ What if food security could last generations?
This is what regenerative design looks like in action.
