Last fall I reseeded my yard with this fine fescue mix:

First image is from my yard, second one is from the website.
The idea was to create a no-mow lawn that wouldn't get too tall but gives us a mounding meadow vibe. My wife calls it "Operation Floppy Lawn". This spring it's growing great, but now we've got a bunch of seed heads sticking straight up. What's your recommendation? Mow it at a high setting to knock down the seeds? Wait for the grass to go through it's germination cycle?
Note: Zone 7 in Huntsville, AL. Our yard is partial shade, and I have automated irrigation.

I’m not gonna lie, and I’m absolutely willing to accept each and every downvote I get with full blown glory.
But people like you piss me off. You wanna create these obscure catastrophes and then when it goes sideways you need help. You wanted to create a “no mow lawn” and now you’re thinking about mowing it because you don’t like seed heads? I mean….what did you expect?
You also have irrigation on a timer, which means you’re not hellbent on saving the planet or conserving resources. You just had to be different and stupid. That’s not to mention that I’m certain your neighbors despise you for this. Do your civic duty and clean this mess up for the well-being of everyone around you. It’s not cute or quirky, it lowers your property value and makes your neighbors mutter in disgust when they have to look at it.
I really wish this was the old r/LawnCare where people would put you in your place, but unfortunately this place is also a shell of its former self.
Tl;Dr this looks like ass and you should be ashamed.
>mow it high
>bag it
>sell your bag of seed
>?????
>profit
I like the look of it. I think the seeding is annoying though…. that would make me not do it. I’m growing tall fescue now.
Ticktopia!
I’m sorry, but this is hideous.
Beautiful. I would enjoy watching the wind ripple through.
There are 6 varieties of venomous snakes in Huntsville, Alabama. Just saying.
How are you even going to mow that at this point? A scythe? Good luck.
I like it! Looks kinda Scottish or something.
Tick thing is real, though. Hope you don’t have a dog. Wear grocery sacks over your socks when you go out there!
Mow it
Didn’t look or work like the advertisement, go figure.
It looks awesome, just plant some wildflowers in there too
The photo is the stock photo off the seed mix packaging?
Despite some who want to name call I find the idea interesting and actually think it looks okay.
Just bc it looks different doesn’t means you’re stupid or you’re a shitty neighbor. If people want to see shitty neighbors I’ll sow you some! It involves way more than an unkept lawns. Yes, it’s failed and now you have a mess to Fix but I don’t see where name calling helps.
People in this sub who care about grass and helping don’t do that! The ones that do can fuck off work their sentiment and should be reported. Help or go somewhere else.
BUT There is a high and valid concern for snakes and other vertebrae pest at this height which is why I think you probably picked the wrong lawn type for a no mow situation. There are some zoysia Cultivars that are cool at this, however I’m not sure they preform the way you want them to in AL.
I think your best bet at this point is to mow it as high as you possible can. You’ll probably have to start with a sling blade or string trimmer and slowly moving it down. Get it to a manageable height and keep it like a normal lawn. 4”.
You could think about pgr to help cut down mowing but i agree that letting it get too high causes too many problems in the long run.
I love that. Just need some land
