Alright. This plant is driving me insane. For about a year and a half, it was beautiful, full, covered in healthy leaves. It caught thrips and all the bottom leaves fell off, but I was able to save it with just some top leaves. I’d repotted it into a much bigger pot, and then, it dropped ALL its leaves!!! But then little sprouts showed up, and more beautiful leaves appeared. Those quickly also started curling, turning grey, and falling off. I checked and noticed that the roots hadn’t integrated into the new soil at all in over a month, and I worried it wasn’t drying out and the pot was too big. So I moved it into this smaller pot again which was still larger than its original sort of “root ball” was, and filled it with well draining soil. This was yesterday. I’m hoping it reacts well… I really don’t know what to do at this point! It used to be so healthy and beautiful but even after the thrips are gone, it has never been the same. How can I get more leaves, especially lower down? I tried notching without success.
I water it at least once a week, and not until the top few inches of soil are dry. When I recently repotted there were no signs of root rot. It sits close to windows on both sides and gets direct sun for at least 5 hours per day, and lots of indirect sun. But maybe it’s still not enough???

Avocados go very deep with their roots. And a lots of trees need equal space for their roots, compared to the crown.
So I repoted my little one into a deeper pot.
It took him a while to grow more roots, but after a few weeks it started to grow new leaves again.
Maybe try a new pot too ?
I would be dramatic too if I were an outdoor tree evolved to grow in full sunlight, growing inside in indirect lighting
