I'll get it in the ground this evening. We've just dug up half our lawn to make a massive border and we are so excited for how much more interesting our little garden is going to become.

Sell your Tesla and buy some nice pots

Now you are going to start a lifelong love of roses and end up with 26 varieties.

  3. Looks like a David Austin rose, they’ve been fantastic in my garden, the speed at which they grow is fantastic.

The website has some great tips on care, when to prune etc, worth giving it a read.

Otherwise enjoy your wonderful new rose!

Now about your rose OP, make sure you spread out the roots otherwise they might be slow to extend outwards. Use some manure if you have, if not regular compost will do and mix it with the soil where you want to plant it. Water it and watch it grow 👀🙂

You’ll nurture it and it will last a lifetime. I’ve got a rose in my garden that’s over 40 years old. It was in my childhood garden.

Plant it and buy more… incidentally, what rose did you buy? I’m a sucker for David Austin roses.

What type of rose is it? Bush, climber, shrub?

I dig a hole a spade wide and deep. Handful of general compost and a generous scoop of well rotted manure in the bottom, along with an appropriate dose of mycorrhizal fungi. Pop the rose in so that the main stem is a couple of cm below the soil level, and backfill with soil mixed with a bit more manure and some bone meal.

Compact the soil tightly to avoid air pockets, and leave a thick layer of compost or mulch around the base. Water really well (whole watering can at least), and continue to water well on a regular basis for the first growing season. I quite like using “Uncle Tom’s Rose Tonic” as an occasional supplement. Not sure if all those steps are needed, but we have over half a dozen roses, and they’re all doing very well. Hope that helps!

Put it in the ground, Liam!

Someone told me about Strulch the other day – check it out as a mulch

I live near DA and have quite a few. Don’t overthink planting it. They’re tough as old boots, so certainly dont need any special treatment compared to any other plant, but I would feed them from time to time just to get the best out of them.

One thing I learned (sorry that this will cost a lot of money…) is that a solo rose can be great, but they look best if you group three (or more) of the same rose together. I’d plant this one and see how it establishes. If it does well, buy two more next year. If you get the chance to go back in about a month, all the roses in their rose garden will be out and you’ll see what I mean. Its the density of several plants that really gives you a wow moment.

Put on some Latin music and dance around with it in your teeth. Helps it grow.

Bottom of the hole needs fish blood and bone (be generous) and id plant it at a cooler time (not in the full heat of day) and keep it watered.
Also if its grafted (one rose variety onto base of another) be careful how deep you plant it and watch out for shoots below the graft line. They will be of root stock.

We need to know which rose you purchased, please.
I’ve had a few David Austin roses they give great advice on their website and over the phone.

Use a good rose food/fertiliser. It will need a bit of space around it as they don’t like being squished. (How do I know this? You may well ask.)

I hope you enjoy your new flower bed, please post some pics when you’re done.

Give it 12 months and you will have at least 25 plants (that is how it went for me!)

I planted my first two in February in a bare border. They were bare and brown and not a leaf in sight. I dug hole and chucked in some compost and they both thriving with tons of new leaves now. I got the Arthur Bell and Timeless charisma

I’m definitely going to buy more

Buy or borrow a book called ‘The Rose Expert’ by Dr. Hessayon. It’s an oldie but a goody!
