Hey y'all. I have been terrible at the lawn care. When I tried last year around September time, I threw down big box weed and feed, Scott's seeds and set a watering schedule but it didn't work.

I'm serious about it and would love to hear how to make this come back. Where the weeds are are thick, dandelions are plentiful, and the kids are covered in dirt and mud when just trying to play when it rained a day ago.

I appreciate all advice and hope everyone has a good day.

Spray the weeds don’t use a weed and feed. They are 60 to 70% effective and you have to put it down like in the morning dew and most of it bounces off. Put down a fertilizer with crabgrass preventer now. Mow what you have high. Wait until fall to reseed your lawn. Seeding now will fail. Verticut or aerate this fall with a good seed. The label should say 0 weed seed on the bag. Don’t go cheap on seed. Get a good quality seed.

Just gonna say too, play the long game, you’ll see results, but 2-3 years from now with diligent work, the results will be even better

You can’t play lawns until you pick up your toys!

Let me tell you what I did last year. Around September to October 2024, I approached one of the gardening companies in my neighborhood. You know, the ones working on your neighbors’ yards. It never hurts to ask them questions — especially since they know a lot about your area and are usually open to picking up new customers.

I asked them for a quote for aerating and seeding my lawn — front yard and backyard. They gave me a pretty good deal, so I went for it. After they finished, I installed some sprinklers in both the front and back yards, and I made sure to set up timers for easy watering.

My wife actually joined me on the journey. Whenever I couldn’t wake up early enough (you know, thanks to a bit too much bourbon the night before), she took over — watering the front yard and keeping an eye on the timers in the back.

Fast forward to late March this year — I checked my lawn and it looked *way* better than last year. At this point, I didn’t even need to reseed. Now I’m just focusing on maintaining the lawn — keeping it healthy and looking good.

For this warm season, I’m definitely putting time and energy into it — using lawn food, pre-emergents, and post-emergents. Then, once fall rolls around, probably around the end of September, it’ll be the perfect time to seed again if needed.

  6. Bag your grass as well due to the weeds. Don’t want to redistribute weeds in your lawn. Cutting grass without bags (mulch mode) is for when it’s mostly grass.

Dont focus on the lawn. It’s only the fruit of the tree. Focus on repairing and improving your SOIL. Without a soil test youre flying blind. It’s hard to go wrong with a top dressing of compost though
