This plant grew out of my old homes window and I don’t know what it is. But my at the time girlfriend thought it was cute to try and grow whatever sprout came through the rocks and took care of it.
This thing was around from when she first moved in, through all the problems, through all the good times, and thrived through 3 years, until we got engaged and soon married. So there’s a lot of emotional connection with it.
What I would like to know is; if there is a way to take it with us to our new apartment, and what kind of plant it is? We assumed some kind of weed but now it looks like a young tree. So any help would be greatly appreciated. She has already given up on taking it with us but I wanna surprise her with it.

Kind of looks like slippery elm, is the back of the leaves rough feeling ?
You may be able to pull enough of the root system out and transplant elsewhere.
If you dig it out from where it’s at it’s not far under the house I see but basically get some potting soil plant it in a big pot and just watch it for a couple of weeks it’ll have more signs of what it could be that’s what I did with my suspicious tree look plants.
First, the title is hilarious out of context.
Second, you can try propagating it if it’s difficult to obtain/move or doesn’t live during the process. I’d take a cutting just to be safe.
Hazel maybe?
I’m just picturing you getting it planted, it grows huge and in 50 years from now you’re sitting with her under it in the shade. freaking Disney movie or something in the making!
Look into air layering and you can grow roots on one of the branches and then grow a “new” tree that you take with you.
Probably hazel or limetree/linden tree. Dont know if thats the right term in english though.
From my experience digging up saplings like that:
Its gonna be a pain in the ass digging up the roots, and then because you will not get them all, it will cripple and maybe die off half, before coming back and becoming a healthy tree only half its current size.
This tree is probably like 3 or 4 years old, and if you are serious a bout it dig up a sappling that is just 1 or 2 years old. This will be better in the long term.
That’s an hazel tree. You can easily plant a new one. They grow pretty fast.
Those leaves remind me of a Hazelnut tree. Are they fuzzy?
Not to be a downer, but trying to get the root system out of that is going to be hell. Its taproot is probably pretty far down by now and you’ll have to chop up the roots in general to get it out. It’s not impossible, but it’s very unlikely to go as well as you hope.
I would put a pit around it or wrap ina bag and air layer it get a new and improved root system going if your going to move it. New home new roots.
You could try posting to the r/arborists subreddit. They will easily identify it and might be able to tell you if the main root can be extracted. It appears to be growing from under the building so I’m not certain you can remove enough of the root.
