So we have a fairly large apartment patio (all cement as pictured) and I’m wondering what budget friendly options people have found for planters/pots. Or any ideas for the space!

This photo is from when we first moved in and I currently have a plum tree that needs replanting and a bunch of plants still in their nursery pots but I’ve already spent hundreds on pots and soil! I never realized how pricy these things are!

Any tips and suggestions would be highly appreciated! Someone suggested using plastic containers from a dollar store but I’m afraid of potential chemicals leaching into the soil? Not sure if that’s a valid fear tho!

You didn’t mention your location, so these suggestions may or may not be available to you. Think outside the box on planting options. Felt grow bags are inexpensive and work well, though they dry out quickly. Ikea blue bags can make great planters and also many/most ikea plastics are food safe. If you’re in the US, there are loads of resources on recycling codes and food safe plastics. Five gallon buckets can make good planters too (you can spray paint the outsides if you want). Find food safe ones in Restaurant supply places, or sometimes for free from bakeries. Research specific types if getting from home improvement stores- I read conflicting info. I’ve also seen people use Rubbermaid storage tubs but haven’t looked into the safety myself to recommend
