I’ve been trying to keep this plant alive for my partner, but it’s not looking good. I don’t know what kind it is or what I’m doing wrong.

It gets about half a cup of water a week, and the soil feels damp most of the time. It only gets a little sunlight—maybe 2 hours a day through a window. Any ID or care tips would really help. Thanks!

The potting mix may need to be replaced aim for one with a good amount of drainage. I also recommend cutting the plant to where there is still life. It could be that it’s just getting too stringy and the plant has to work harder to get to the nutrients. You can even try propagating by just a single leaf.

It’s also important to note that Succulents are C4 (they process water, and breathe through their Stomata’s at night as they would in a desert setting) plants meaning they absolutely depend on the sun to regulate their and shrivel under damp, cool, poorly lit conditions. I believe you’re looking at what I’ve been known to call “burritos tail”. Honestly if there’s anything I’ve learned about any succulent upkeep is that they should be outside, and they thrive off “neglect” by that I mean they don’t need constant watering or pruning. I still talk to mine and give them love. 💕

You’re watering too often and too little. Soak the soil, let it dry out and then stay dry for a couple of weeks before you water again. The soil should dry in less than a week. These should spend more time in dry soil than wet soil

If the soil doesn’t dry in a week, repot in grittier soil with pumice and very coarse sand

The plant also needs much more sun

When it’s healthier you can cut off the green ends, let them dry a few days and put them in soil. Water lightly and then leave them alone, they’ll grow roots. Don’t water until they are firmly rooted

These plants are really hardy and you have caught it in time to save it! Cut off the alive bits, let them callus over for a few days, then plant them back into a very well draining succulent mix. Importantly, get rid of the saucer, and only water it when it’s 100% dry.

Although they’re delicate they will also grow from each little leaf that drops off. Just place it on top of the potting mix and it should put out roots.

Up-pot with fresh succulent soil and bury up til the fresh branches. It will be very happy. And don’t over water. ✨
