Hi folks,
I thought this community might be interested in an essay I recently published on the history of chemical lawns and killing biodiversity with herbicides: https://www.noemamag.com/the-war-on-weeds/

Great read thank you. Everyone knows about Roundup but 2,4 D is not as widely known I think…. And I was browsing the lawn section of my home depot last week… 2,4-D is in SO many lawn products.
Thanks for this!
This is a good article!
One thing you touched on here but that I think bares repeating – we really *need* herbicides for dealing with invasive species. I tend to think of invasive species in our native habitats like a cancer, and herbicides like chemotherapy. Chemotherapy is successful when used in a targeted and clinical way. You don’t just go get chemotherapy from some unlicensed guy or try to diy it. Likewise, we shouldn’t be spraying fields with herbicides and insecticides en mass. On the other hand, allowing invasive species to spread is equally damaging to our environment, so we need to use the tools we have to try and keep them at bay. In many cases, that means using herbicides to target invasive species.
Are you coming back to bsky?? Would love to share this there, but I’ll wait if you wanna post it yourself
When do y’all move from 30% vinegar to other herbicides? I’m trying to gently remove some invasive weeds so the clover can thrive a little better and vinegar seems to work well enough.
