Welcome back to the garden! In today’s Week 2 garden tour (April 21), I’m sharing a full update from our Zone 3b Canadian garden. You’ll get a look at what’s sprouting, what I’m planting, and what’s still sleeping under the soil. I walk you through the varieties of potatoes I’m growing this year (spoiler: there are a lot), and I’m also revealing my plans for a new cut flower garden—something I’ve been wanting to do for a while. And of course, it wouldn’t be a spring video without a fun little seed haul.

Whether you’re gardening in a short-season climate or just love following along with the rhythm of the seasons, I hope this video inspires you to get your hands in the dirt.

  1. You do know that tulips are deer candy. We got our house almost 12 years ago and I planted tulips, daffodils, etc – all the spring bulbs that I love. We are at an altitude of about 7800 ft, and growing zone 4b. I those almost 12 years, I have gotten maybe 2 tulips as the deer eat the tulips almost as soon as they break ground. If I get new bulbs, I’ll plant them in a pot up on the deck. Good luck with yours!

  2. Also, you can start parsnips, carrots, other long skinny root crops, in toilet paper tubes. Same as the paper pots, you just plant them in an entire thing. The tube becomes compost and you haven’t disturbed the roots or the crop hen you plant outside.

  3. My oldest daughter gave me a plaque that I have hanging on the wall by the door. " I've child-proofed my house, but they still get back in"
My kids are all grown and the older two have families of their own. So when it's just the two of us, we don't need much in the way of food and space. But when they all come home, then I like that my freezers are full. I want a big garden and a full pantry. We want to build a new house on our 40 acres. A home cozy enough for two, but can fit our crew that keeps growing. I hold Sunday night supper, and every holiday so I do need more space, and I like that they all come home.

  4. It's a transition time. Between raising your kids, they all move out, till when they start having their own kids. A lull to embrace for sure, and do the other things you've always wanted to do. I remember when our youngest went off to school and it was just the two of us. A "Now what" feeling I didn't like. So I bought a Kayak. But then when your house fills up with babies again, and your kids bring home spouses too. It's right back to big family living again.

  5. I love my tea towel! My granddaughter (just 2!) actually hugged it right out of the package, which was hilarious yet cute. I love the bigger than usual size and I’m going to ask for more for Mother’s Day!

  6. I don’t want to be one of those horribly sanctimonious preachy commenters. I promise I’m not!! But. Be really careful with Lillies and cats. All parts of that plant are poisonous to kitties. As a keen gardener and cat lover I felt compelled to warn you! I’ve had cats who’ve completely ignored them but also one who doesn’t and let’s just say it upsets his tummy dreadfully 😱

  7. There is a weed barrier that is made of corn fiber that Liz Zorab has had success with. Territorial Seed sells it. It eventually does break down but it's supposed to take awhile.
