Would fertilizer reduction help too?
laughs in deep south
I would stair step planting the seeds. One platter a few days.
Apparently oxins don't appreciate 125* temps because here in the Mohave Desert 😂 we start planting in October and finishing up around May and June.
Very few plants survive the heat and the ones that do require shade cloth and TLC. Even so the methods used are useful and can be applied anywhere.
Thanks ❤
Wouldn't it be better to sow later?
Thank you so much for sharing……😃✨
I planted brocolli, cabbage and tomatoes in Waterford. No sign of frost for the near future
Your video is perfect timing for me. As Farmer's Almanac predicted, unlike last year, we're having a cool long spring this year in the Pacific Northwest. Cool nights in 30s and low 40s still. I've been holding off planting out my peppers. I've debated potting them up, but I'm hoping to get them planted in my beds next week, so decided potting up then planting out in such a short time would be stressful too. I'll follow your advice and try to keep them going. I have also had good luck with red or black plastic on the soil around plants to keep soil a little warmer, so I'll do that when I transplant them. ❤❤❤
We're still sub 40 some nights here in Wisconsin, and my tomatoes need to be outside ASAP. Thanks for the video.
Wow!! This so good! 👌 very helpful for me..Thanksss .. Luke ❤ I am so worried about my seedlings.. they are growing a little fast..😮 still too cold to plan outside!! I will definitely try them out!! 😊❤
Thank you. Good information
I'm in Wisconsin and have similar issues…
I had to plant my flowers yesterday, I messed up and started them too early in pots really small … when the next frost comes, I will cover them with some gallon water jugs with cut out bottoms or rig up something … so sick of this crappy weather!
Good information, and I know you're growing for sale in the greenhouse. At your zone 6a, though, it's nearly a month out from planting tomatoes safely. 🤷
Is it better to have plants ready for outside OR to have planted seeds a little late? I wasn't able to plant eggplant and tomato seeds when I wanted to.
I know pepper plant seeds needed to be planted a month ago but does anyone out there know how long the plant takes to germinate? I put my seeds in 15 days ago and I don’t see anything. All my other types of plants came up but not them. I plan on buying some pepper plants from a garden shop but I’m just curious
I’m in northern Illinois, Zone 5b, and it’s WAY too cold to plant summer crops, yet! I’m trying to learn from last year when I started my tomatoes too early. I’m hoping that by the time my just-started tomato seeds are ready to plant, it will be warmer. Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom with us!
So how do I know when to plant my seedlings outside? Thanks!!😊
I tried to use the seed app that you talked about but it was too confusing for my ADHD brain 😂
THANK YOU for posting this!! As a newbie gardener here in se mi, I am chomping at the bit to get my garden started! I'll have to sit on my hands for a couple more weeks😢
Our spring can be 15-85 degrees. 😵💫. Seriously. It was 26 the other day. And a few days it'll be 80. And my first spring gardening i had tomatoes in the ground the second week of April. And a couple years ago I didn't plant tomatoes until the second week of june because I had snow on the ground at my house the first week of june.
What I'm trying to learn is potentially use like cold frames or other green house tactics to help level those temperature swings. But its the night temperatures i can't seem to figure out.
The wet garden, and the heavy winds have put a damper on hardening off my plants as well as getting seeds/transplants out there… hoping things turnaround here soon!
QUESTION LUKE-Its 52° out, and the wind is less than 7 mph. Why do the leaves at the ends of the branches on the tomato plants wilt? They have only been outside 15 minutes, and they have been outside for longer for the hardening off process. Please explain.
Lots of outdoor gardening to do first. Mainly pulling weeds from last fall that I let go.
my tomatoes are in the ground my weed is in the greenhouse, Great Lakes Bay Region
You sir are the thoren bradley of plants
I believe you meant 33.3%😊
90 / 60 temps deep in the heart of TX (clap, clap)
I hear you talking but I just keep looking at all of those plants in your greenhouse that I get to shop for on Wednesday!!! So excited! 😃
Luke, you say not to prune tomato top when it's small. I like to prune them below third node to double stem asap. Edit: Am I hurting them? 😢
Lower MI we keep having 40 MPH Winds…Please calm down!!

This is exactly what happens when you plant all that stuff way too early in a greenhouse, especially if you live in Michigan. Never plant until the first week of April, 4-6 weeks growing time in a greenhouse is more than enough time before planting in the garden come middle of May. Take some advice from a Michigan farmer who knows, you are way too early, and now you have problems trying to hold them back for several weeks. All those plants are going to lose their green color, become root bound & spindly. You have gained nothing by planting early and when it does come time to plant in the garden, they are just going to sit there and do nothing for several days before they begin to green up, and that's if you're lucky…..
I run into this every Spring 😂 I watch all these gardeners that live in warmer climates and my climate is much cooler. Cheers 🥂
I already have green tomatoes and will soon be digging potatoes.
Where's the fertilizer I ordered from you?
You share great information! Thank you!
We had a very dry winter and a few weeks of unusually high temps. All of our fruit trees bloomed. It just snowed several inches, with high winds, and we had freezing temps for the last couple of nights. We lost all our blooms 😢.
I started early indoors. My tomatoes were getting big and we were having warm weather. I planted Saturday. It was about this time last year that I planted too. The cold front came through Sunday and brought much needed rain. I was worried, dropped to 37 last night but looks like good the rest of the week, lows in the high 40's. The good thing is, it is early enough to replant if needed. Outside of Omaha by the way.
Thank you Luke! You always come to my rescue. I was worried about my tomatoes and eggplants overgrowth, now I know how to slow them down.
Happy gardening!
What a great video! Ty
New gardner. My cucumber seedlings are leggy and losing color. I moved them and pinched them off.😮 did i kill them?
We had some snow this morning. I’m ready to garden, but the weather is not cooperating. Usually I can’t plan anything outside until after Memorial Day at the end of May.

Thanks again, Luke and team! I have literally hundreds of plants I’m trying to harden off right now. I have a “cold room” that has a walkout door out my basement and I keep them in there as I do it. It works nice because it stays cool and dark but not completely. It still gets the natural light coming in just a smaller amount of it. Regardless it’s the thing I dislike the most about my passion. Hardening off my plants. This is the time of year I start my seeds indoors and set outside under my awning to sprout so they don’t need to be hardened off. Thanks for the video
We have constance rain and wind. I am in Defiance MO
Use of cold water ( around 8 to 10 degrees Celsius)can slow down plants growth , a bit risky but if done early in the morning can do the job . Also reduce watering to the limit .
My season in 8a is weird here in West Washington state. This is the first week its not going to rain and temps not under 40 at night.
To my Southern garden friends, do not be discouraged. I am in Zone 3 and successfully garden every year. Our last frost date is June 2, but I still get a healthy harvest. If you need to start a new set of peppers and tomato seeds, soak them first and you will have a quick germination. This year we are experiencing early spring weather but it varies greatly from year to year. This video is a great tool to add to your arsenal.
I have successfully topped tomatoes, and rooted the cuttings. The original plant produced an abundance of tomatoes, and the cuttings also produced well.
