Not well. It might wear down a bur or clean off the blade. But it doesn’t put on a great edge.

Take your blades off, put em in a vise, and hit em with an angle grinder.

Even if it works it won’t get the job done properly. You have to take the blade off to do it properly because you need to put the center hole on a nail or something to check if the blade is balanced. Can’t do that with it still attached to the mower.

I use this in between removal sharpening. The one I have works pretty good. Keeps the blade sharp.

  4. OnlySeasurfer

I’ve tried it, but was far from convinced. Probably put a bit more of an edge on the blade, but was slow and inconsistent. Wouldn’t recommend unless you are really desperate.

Even if that tool worked, it’s important that the blade is balanced. Doing that with the blades on the mower don’t let you know whether there’s an imbalance. Wobble causes stress on the mower and can cause an uneven cut.

I use an angle grinder with a sanding disk on a vise grip and rest it on a large ratchet to see if the weight is balanced.

  6. Mindless_Squire

I use it. Not perfect, but there’s trade offs like most things in life. It’s quick and idiot proof but don’t expect to use the blade to slice tomatoes.

Not great but if I remove the blade and hold it with a clamp, then apply some elbow grease I can get it ok.

  8. How does everyone sharpen there blades in here? I used a grinder but not sure if that’s what everyone does?

  9. I bought a bunch of these, they are great for taking out rock chips, and very light sharpening.

But if your blade is dull it’s best to take it off and use more substantial tools that can make a clean edge.

But also, balancing the blade is impossible if sharpened while on the mower.

Don’t worry y’all. I wasted my money on it too! My problem is I cannot get the blade off

  11. Major_Turnover5987

I’ve never had success using them. However the kit I got included a balancer which I use successfully.

Take the blade off, put it in a vice and go to town. I’ve used these for about 10 years with good success. Quick and easy sharpen. When you are done, put a nail in the wall and hang the blade, see if one side is heavier, then grind a bit more until level.

  13. Works fine for me. You need to take the blade off each time and balance it, but otherwise it gets sharp enough. Not as good as an angle grinder but a bit less hassle.

What’s the best way to get to the blades on a riding mower
Is it okay to tip on its side or

  15. I like using ryobi 18v finger sander. Works great

  16. Okie294life

Not like that it doesn’t. Youll want to take them off and balance them before putting them back on. Other than that these wheels work okay.

  17. 20PoundHammer

if you have two hours to spare and a bunch of em, sure – else, not so much.

  18. NativTexan

Just get a harbor freight grinder and a metal grinding blade and use that.

  19. It works ok, but a $60 bench grinder works a hell of a lot better.

  20. The_Big_Obe

A belt sander and about 5 or less minutes from start to finish. I try to do it twice a year

  21. ElmoZ71SS

You can use this to sharpen a blade, it’ll take some time and patience and hopefully you have a decent drill. I tried the Arnold kit that came with this stone and the pyramid balancer thingy… got bored, used a pair of C clamp style vise grips to the edge of the outdoor table we have and hit with angle grinder with a 80 grit flap wheel… do both sides check the balance grind the heavy side again and good to go. In and out in a few minutes

  22. Thetrueshiznit

Dremel and a grinding stone. I flip my Honda on its side and I run it down the blades before each mow. Takes a hot minute at best. As long as it’s sharp it cuts. I’m not manicuring a putting green. I bolt up a new blade every other season.

  23. CheapBit7036

Use a plain old file. Mine hangs on a hook just inside the shed. Fast and easy.

  24. hobokobo1028

I use them every year, but I take the blades off and sharpen in a bench vise and spread sharpening paste on a few times each round

  25. TrickUnable9160

Junk, just grind the blade with a flap disk. Practice makes perfect

  26. YouArentReallyThere

Flap disc on an angle grinder that’s locked in a fixture followed up with a bastard file.
