Our raised beds are getting a spring makeover! 🌿 In today’s video, we’re refreshing our elevated planters here in Zone 6A, Upstate New York—re-staining the cedar, spray painting the trellises, refreshing the soil, and even sneaking in our first carrots of the season.
These cedar planter boxes from Gardener’s Supply Company are heading into their fourth season, and we’re sharing how we maintain them for long-term success. We’re also talking about what didn’t work (like last year’s irrigation grids) and what we’re doing instead!
🛠️ Projects in This Video:
• Re-staining elevated cedar beds with food-safe stain
• Spray painting arch trellises
• Refreshing soil with Coast of Maine potting mix
• Removing old drip lines + prepping for new irrigation
• Planting Tonda di Parigi carrots!
Whether you’re growing edibles or ornamentals, this is a great weekend garden project to get your raised beds looking sharp and ready for spring planting.

Everything looks great! Those tools bins are a great idea in the garden. I finally made my 1st trip to the garden center yesterday … potting soil, compost, strawberry & raspberry plants. I'm officially back in the game 😅
Good morning guy’s 🌷I love your raise beds so much 😍 Great job guy’s it’s looking beautiful 🤩👌
Love it!! 👨🎨🧑🎨
Those look so good with the refresh stain/paint! 😍 It does take time, but it lasts for awhile and makes such a difference.
Bought these planters because of you two!👍🏻🥰I learned of a sale they had from your Instagram video! This will be our first year with them. Can you share the irrigation systems you have inside each bed? We don’t have any set-up yet but need something. I live on Long Island, in zone 7b. Thanks for your amazing videos! I also got the new catalog with you two in it! So so cool! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Good morning, everything looks amazing!
Normally I speed up videos because I’m anxious to go to the next one but yours and a few other gardening channels, I keep at normal speed. I feel like I’m lingering in your beautiful garden.
Wow!
Love the tool boxes, such a practical and cute thing. Refresh looks great. Drip is great but also hard, we too haven’t quite fine tuned ours. Last year we did the same as you just put in and ended up with wet areas and dry areas. Not quite sure how to remedy it but we might try spirals instead of around the perimeter. I ended up watering with a hose (which we have conveniently close by and wasn’t a big issue) a couple times a week in the dry spots. Not ideal especially if you’re going on vacation or anything like that.
The refresh black looks amazing in the garden area! Enjoying your channel so much! Thanks for sharing!
You both work so well together and your gardens are so beautiful 😊
❤
Roots have tons of nutrients and will break down… I leave the roots from old plants in my soil to feed my new plants and feed the soil. It breaks down and you don't even see them anymore after a while! I wish I could get Coast of Maine products. I don't think any place carries it here in Montana.
Do your raised beds have drainage holes in the bottom?
Yes! That really made a huge impact with that stain and paint. Just wondering if you have those beds lined with something on the inside to prevent the soil from leaching out?
Hey neighbors, thank you for the mailbox idea. I think I will add one near my vegetable garden. I don't know why, but every time I go to work in the garden, I always seem to forget something and have to walk back to the garage. My 15k steps will be 10k now. haha
the beds look stunning! now i'm motivated to get outside and freshen up my space as well.
Coast of Maine soil products are definitely good. I made a mistake this year of using a generic seed starting soil mix because I didn’t have the will to travel to a better garden store, and it definitely has resulted in stunted plant growth. I’m trying to remediate the situation with fertilizer and quality soil as I up pot. The plants are looking better, but stressing about playing catch up is not fun! Oh, and I’m starting carrots as well as peas too outside tomorrow! 😊
That would be an interesting flavor. I loved the facial expressions when everyone tried. You should try lavender and honey. It is my favorite from an ice cream shop in Kansas
Hi Eric and Christopher!! I just discovered your channel a few days ago and binged several videos. You two are AWESOME!! I live in MA and you convinced me to buy Coast of Maine soil at my local Ace. I can't wait to plant with it. I'm impatiently waiting for the weather to warm up in order to plant my favorites (Dahlias and tall Zinnias). I also have a bunny and groundhog problem so I fence off their favorites or plant in containers on my deck. I can't have tall Phlox because the deer decimate it along with sunflowers. One terrible situation I have is that I brought in a plant that must have had Dodder seeds in it. I neglected my garden for a few years due to medical and yep, it took over. I have to just remove and toss everything and start over in a new spot because I read Dodder can lie dormant for years and I sure as heck don't want to transplant anything and risk relocating this nasty, parasitic, "wish I could burn it to the ground" weed. I'll turn the garden into a fire pit for now. It's bad. I hope you guys don't ever have THAT problem. I love your creativity in the backyard. Now you just need a salt water pool with a heat pump and a hot tub with a trellis for privacy!!🤣👍 Thank you for putting out informative and fun content. Laurel
Maybe all you needed in the watering system was a pressure gauge to control the flow 😊
The raised beds look amazing look forward to seeing what you plant. 🪴
Everything is looking so good
You can harvest "new" potatoes and not wait until the foliage dies. New potatoes are delicious. We get way too many potatoes to only harvest at the end of the plant life. So we start harvesting for meals throughout the season as soon as we can. And since you are getting your fill, or at least a couple of meals throughout the season, no guilt once you pull any crappy looking foliage.
Looking great guys! Happy Spring!
looking good!! perhaps you can find a corner where you don't mind having a big planter of ugly potatoes!!
One tiny comment on the carrots (hope I'm not telling you want to do if you've done them in the past!), cover that bit with a little cardboard so that it stays damp – especially if you aren't having the drip on it quite yet. You'll get a TON more seedlings to germinate because even just a touch of dry will make them die or be tiny. Take the cover off when they should have started germinating and you're good to go 🙂
Hi guys, how do you have your drip attached to water? Is it tied to main water for house or just to a faucet? Could you show the panel sometime? Thank you
I’ve been so jealous of your black beds!!! I want want want
Your garden is so groomed! I don’t see one weed 😂 Another great video! Thank you and Happy Easter from Florida
Looks great. Amazing what a fresh coat of paint can do (though your beds and the frames looked great). For the wire frames, I usually paint with a brush as the wires are so thin and there are lots of gaps where spray paint just goes into the air.
The raised bed refresh looks great. Looking forward to your garden awakening. Thank you both!
Wow, that spray paint sure did the trick! What color of rustoleum was it? Is it matte or is there a shine to it? Looks so sharp! Also curious what kind of stone you guys used in that area. It looks so striking with the black beds!
What a great ideal for the mailbox on the side of the vegetable planter. I would love to copy the ideal for my daughter who is just started her first vegetable garden.
May I ask where did you find the old style mailbox?
