So I went away for a month and left my plant out to be watered by my housemates. I came back last night and it looked terrible. I only bought the plant 6 months and ago and it's my first ever plant. One of my housemates emptied the water sitting at the bottom of the pot and my French housemate said that if we cut off any unhealthy leaves, we can save it. It now looks like that… I panicked and probably took off more than I should have according to my French housemate.

Is it going to be okay? Please help. 1 don't trust him. Also I think it's some sort of fern, not too sure? Sorry, I know I'm a bad plant dad 🙁

Why do you keep calling them your French Housemate? Feels weird. What does the French part have to do with anything?

Seems like this is a fern and it got sun burned. It doesn’t seem over or underwatered. It should come back but maybe try to find a shadier spot? Maybe this isnt the best choice for a first plant. Find a pothos or devils ivy. You will plants as you learn to take care of them don’t worry so much!

It’s a birdsnest fern. Don’t let it sit in water.

Agree with the french housemate here.

Whether this birds nest fern is under or overwatered, it most likely lost some (if not all) roots and the remaining roots cant supply all the leaves with enough water.

Personally i would cut them all except the fiddleheads in the center.

I’d blame the Malaysian. I truly believe he is framing your French friend.

Also remove the tin foil from the bottom. You’re stopping air get to the bottom of the pot and without good circulation you’re more prone to rot

It’s a Bird’s Nest fern and yes, you can bring it back from this state. If you see ANY little green knobs poking their heads up in the center it’s not too late. Even if you can’t see them now, I wouldn’t give up. I had one for years that I abused constantly and brought it back from the brink more than once!

There is a lot of good advice here, I’m going to re-state some because it will be very helpful. First of all, that was a lack of water. It doesn’t want to stay wet all the time, but it won’t like being really dry either. Take that foil off of the bottom of the pot and put it in a saucer or plastic plate that is larger than the pot bottom. You want the water to drain out but not onto the floor, but that foil is going to probably cause rot issues.

Don’t cut off any more leaves until you see what is going on. What you have done won’t cause any harm, but I just wouldn’t cut anymore until you see if the leaves that are there are going to recover. If they do, great. If not, cut them off.

Just keep an eye on the center of the plant, if you see little “fiddleheads” now, that’s great, it’s alive! If you don’t, don’t give up just keep an eye on it.

Come back and let us know what happens!!!

I think I know *someone* in this post who calls a certain historical figure Karl der Große, and not Charlemagne.

  15. Perceptionskills

Next time you buy a plant, start with researching what plant it is and the care it needs. That should be part of the fun.

  16. Own-Bat-7160

i can’t explain it but in picture 2 the leaves look like they would feel heavy like wet lasagna noodles

  19. NoTransition4354

They’re cutting the succulents. They’re cutting the ferns. They’re cutting the plants of the people that live there.
