  1. 🌱 What are YOU growing this season?
Tell me about your patio, balcony, or container garden below—I love hearing your plans and ideas! And if you’ve got questions about setup or plant choices, drop them here. I’m happy to help! 💚👇

  2. While I have raised beds at least a third of my growing is in pots. I started 5 years ago in pots of a variety of sizes and 5 gallon buckets. I was newly retired and had to start w what I had. Not long after this, I found Brian! I never thought about growing potatoes in a bucket but thanks to him I did. These are the things I grow year after year in pots, pails or buckets: a variety of tomatoes, tomatillos, collards, carrots, Swiss chard, radishes, kales, lettuces, beans, peas, peppers, egg plant, sweet potatoes and a variety of flowers.

Thank you Brian, Emily and Noah (sweet potatoes starts!) for being a part of my growing journey. ❤

  3. I have a small section for my garden, approx 20ft by 5ft. I grow in containers with rubbermade totes being my fave because people discard them so they are easy to acquire for free (or low cost at goodwill). I also salvage 3 and 10 gal nursery pots when neighbors re-landscape. I raise the tubs higher with bricks and set the pots below the totes to catch drain water. Right now I have tomatoes, bell peppers, zucchini, watermelon and pumpkins along with flowers and herbs mixed in as companion plants. So far so good, everything looks healthy and happy. Fingers crossed. So Cal, zone 9b

  4. I use cheap wastebaskets to grow carrots, about 12" deep. Drill or melt holes (with a soldering iron) in the bottom. I start a fresh container about once a month. Almost all of my containers are self-watering (wicking) to cut back on how often I have to water.

  5. I started a 5×10 ground floor patio garden this year. It’s very challenging. There’s no water or electricity available, a water heater closet I need to always remain accessible (and I can’t store things in). There’s a balcony above me that completely blocks sunlight for a coupke hours, and the building blocks sun in the mid-evening. There’s also a 3.5’ high, fully opaque, perimeter. I have one greenstalk and two metal vertical pot holders. I made an elevated space that I can use to hold containers above the perimeter. I’ll eventually use that as a potting bench in the next place. And I have my chair blocking the water heater closet!

  6. I have a fenced in garden to keep bunnies and deer out. Currently I have landscape fabric on almost all of it with raised beds along the perimeter. I have cattle panel trellis for pole beans and personal size melons and all my tomatoes and peppers in fabric grow bags 5 gal for peppers and 10-15 gal grow bags for 1 tomato plant each. I am still learning how to get a decent harvest. I live in central Georgia where full sun is brutal. So planning for shade cloth.

  7. Is that house you're always walking away from YOUR house? Before, I thought the house in the background was your "across the street" neighbor's house. I have a 1910 bungalow that I absolutely adore but that house you have is the cutest and most adorable little cottage I've ever seen ! Yeah, it's the door and thatch. 💚
It must've been grandfathered in. The insurance companies won't even let us install shake roofs anymore. Because they're a flammable material?? Sheesh, an entire house is FLAMMABLE. 🤪
Except mine is sandstone but I digress

  8. You can grow certain classes of tobacco in containers in tight spaces. The class known as "Oriental" (Encompassing Turkish, Greek, Macedonian, and Balkan tobaccos) all do VERY will in 10 liter (2.5 gallon) pots, and grow in columnar form to about 4 feet tall. The lush green foliage and bright flowers make them very attractive to grow, plus they are very fast growing, and, yes, you can cure and smoke them, as well.

  9. Thanks, Brian!! While I have two small in-ground plots, I have containers scattered all OVER the property. And a VegePod, which I really like. It gets used mainly for leafy greens, or veggies that don't need pollinating. Still a mite cold here in Ontario, but I plan to get the little tiller running tomorrow and stir up my soil! Can't wait to get growing!! 👍

  10. Just in case Brian forgets to mention it but there is a sale this Easter weekend 2025 on 7 tiers leaf GreenStalk. He has a code somewhere for additional $10 off. Have a beautiful and blessed day. Happy Easter

  11. We have a raised bed garden in the back corner of our yard. We have 6 raised beds ranging from 2.5 by 3 all the way to 4 by 16. We also have 2 in bed gardens back there for garlic and sun flowers/zinnias. In addition to the garden corner we have hot peppers in pots on the deck by the fence. My daughter asked for flowers so we put flower boxes around the big garden on the fence that keeps our dog out of the beds. Each of my kids have their own 2 by 4 bed near the fence and they pick what grows in them. I'm addition we have a front flower bed in front of the house that we've been adding to each year.

  12. I get food safe 5 gal buckets from Firehouse Subs for $3. They’ve lasted in the Deep South sun for 3 years so far.

  13. I want to grow blueberries along with my vegetables. I have two containers, both are 17 in tall. I'm worried about the pH difference. Can I acidify the soil for the blueberries without it impacting the soil underneath and impacting nearby peach tree and the other container?

  14. Brian even though I have one acre. I think I will still enjoy this new series! I DO LIKE like to grow in small spaces throughout my property!

  15. Though we live on two acres, and have plenty of space to garden, this series will be helpful and informative. Thanks for all the good advice. Sure would like a video of your entire property. It looks lovely.

  16. You need to come film my urban balcony garden! I grow lettuce, herbs, tomatoes, cucumbers, squash and more!

  17. Thank you for this series. I need all the help I can get. I struggle with the soil composition and using the right size pot

  18. I'm so excited for this series!!! I only have a small deck, but great sun, so….I started some herbs from seed (parsley, Lots of parsley, I love it!), thyme, lavender, and oregano. Also some lettuce which my cat jumped into and probably ruined…. we'll see… and just today purchased starts for a wild cherry tomato, lunchbox bell pepper and a lemon bee balm. Because I'm new to the area I live in, I want to start small to increase my confidence, so maybe just the lettuce (if it makes it), tomatoes, bell peppers, herbs, and some flowers this year. I am SOOO tempted to get strawberries and blueberries and cucumbers, and onions, and, and, and. lol! I think I'd be better off starting small. You are a fabulous teacher and I truly appreciate the clear guidance you give. I'm SO looking forward to this series! Thank you for taking the time and effort to do something for 'the other half' who don't have any ground to grow in. 🙂 🙂 🙂
