In this video, I share how to build the perfect raised garden bed. After nearly a decade of raised bed gardening, I have learned what works and what doesn’t, and this is the best raised garden bed design I’ve ever used. This easy DIY raised garden bed is deep enough to minimize bending and saves your back without being too expensive to fill, has railings to sit on for comfort and ease, and will last 10 years or longer, even in humid, wet climates.

  2. I wouldn't use any sort of chemical treated timber in a garden. Even if it were only a flower garden, you don't know how the soil will get moved around in future, or someone decides to underplant an edible plant there. All those fungicides and insecticides will leach out eventually, no matter how much the manufacturer claims they won't! Remember the days when we were told glyphosate left no residue, asbestos was safe, and smoking was good for our health?

Either use clean timber and accept that it will rot out in a few years, or pay out for something permanent in brick, stone, or concrete. Steel is an in-between option but it's nasty to handle when it rusts out so I wouldn't go there. Timber as a short-term test, and masonry when the timber rots out but you're sure about where and how big the beds should be so you don't mind paying for permanence, is a good way to get the best benefits of both.

  3. What about the azole part of the treatment? Is tebuconazole a problem in pressure treated lumber?

  4. Beautiful sir! Very similar to mine. I made my 2 larger beds 4x12x24 so I used two braces about 3ft down on each length side; also to prevent outward bowing, I put 2×4 across the inside to attach the braces in the middle of the bed. I also used 4x4s for braces and 6in for my seating (I have a fat ass lol).

They're tanks but should last for many years.

  5. Hey there! Fellow NC gardener here. I love your recipe for raised beds. I want to try this. They look simple, efficient and very attractive! Thank you for the wonderful instructions.
I have a question; where do you get those clamps for the pvc hoops please? I glanced through your storefront and did not find them. Thank you so much. 😊

  6. We need a simple way to make compost living in the city and not having too much kitchen scraps. Tha one you did with the barrell….hmmmm not too
    friendly.

  7. Followed this build last weekend and I have to say. It was easy and came out looking like a professional did it. Great guide, 100% recommend people giving it a try. Cost around $150 in materials.

  8. Puttin that College Degree to work I see. Great job sharing this technique with us and will definitely be using it. My cheap version with Free Pallet wood after 1 year of seasons they are already coming apart and I have the best T star Deck Screws from Home Depot in them.

  9. Do you have videos on planting fruit trees? I’m also in NC in the Raleigh area, looking to start fruit trees now that I just moved into my new home

  10. Great video and I plan to build identical raised beds; but there is one thing you didn’t cover. What do you recommend for the base? In particular do you recommend any wire mesh under the filter fabric?

  11. This is a GREAT video! I had been thinking about making raised beds, but I wasn't sure if I could build them. After watching this, I feel confident I can make these because of your detailed guidance. Thank you!

  14. This is great! I was pricing wood & the cedar was making me cry. I had used fir, its lasted me 7 years, but it needs replacing something fierce.
