Bought my first house and complete newbie on lawncare. What is the process for improving grass that is 1-2 years old. Scarify and low nitrogen fertiliser?

How many hours per day is the balding area in the shade? From what I can see the rest looks decent

I would start with what you said. Scarify, mow to remove it all, then nitrogen. Then wait and see the results. This more art than science.

Scarify to remove dead patches and thatched areas followed by nitrogen to promote new leaf growth and fill in gaps.
Always best to carry out any treatment at beginning of growing season as opposed to when grass is dormant so your grass quickly rejuvenates.
