Transplanting onion seedlings into containers is a rewarding process that allows you to grow fresh onions even in limited space. Here’s how to do it:

Prepare the Container: Choose a container with good drainage holes. It should be at least 6–8 inches (15–20 cm) deep to accommodate the onion bulbs as they grow.

Select the Soil: Use a nutrient-rich, well-draining potting mix. Adding compost or organic matter will provide the seedlings with the nutrients they need.

Seedling Preparation: Gently remove the seedlings from their original location, being careful not to damage the roots. It’s best to transplant them when they have 3–4 leaves.

Planting the Seedlings: Make small holes in the soil, spacing them about 4 inches (10 cm) apart. Place the seedlings into the holes, ensuring the roots are covered, but don’t bury the stems too deep.

Watering: After planting, water the seedlings thoroughly to help them settle in. Keep the soil consistently moist, but avoid overwatering.

Sunlight and Care: Place the container in a spot where it will get full sunlight for at least 6–8 hours a day. Regularly check the plants for pests and apply fertilizer periodically to support growth.

With proper care, your onion plants will thrive and reward you with a fresh and flavorful harvest.

  1. Hi Ivan I sown my onions In a tub and have since moved them into pots singular some have 3 stems would I still need to harden them off before planting them outside. Since speaking last with you I now have half allotment plot have sown carrots in egg boxes in my polytunnel and covered with a cloche but very slow at getting them to germinate any ideas

  2. Ivan the Containerrible! 😅😂 Thanks for all the advice. My first year growing went well and I'd say it's mostly because of you and the videos. Looking forward to this season!

  3. Thank you for a very informative video. I am also a great believer in reusing potting compost. Always have good yields and adding blood fish and bone, I agree is essential. Out of interest, I did some calculations and found that 50 grams per 10 litres of compost was about right.

  4. Ivan It’s my first time growing and I’m following along doing what you are doing, so hopefully I’ll have some success as well. Will plant my onions seedling out tomorrow. Looking forward to this season with you as my teacher! Thank you

  5. Great to feel a bit of sun and start seed sowing. Love the tip of using the bottle top to gauge the size of the spacing for the onions. Thank you

  6. i took your advice about saving old compost from last year. Ive bought 2 massive compost bags and put all the old compost in and plus ive added loads of my rabbits and guinea pigs poo. It has saved me quite a bit of money. I just need a bigger soil sieve now, the one ive got takes forever to use.
