Hi I have Mone Tree – Pachira aquatica
It’s pretty bushy right now. I want to continue braiding it, but have a couple questions.
-
How much leaves can I prune back?
-
Should I cut this runner that’s reaching for the skies? Or is this one that will be part of the braid?
-
How should I care for it to ensure it grows taller?
I want to continue braiding it, till it’s about 2-3 feet tall.
Thanks in advance!

Slow down cowboy/cowgirl/cowthey!
That plant is a bebe. Whatever you’re thinking, it is not going to happen in the next calendar year!
Please don’t trim any of that tree just yet, it needs every bit of energy to keep growing!
Most importantly for now, please push your finger into the soil, against the trunks, please cut that rubber band or tie that they put around those stalks at the base. It’s usually just under the soil line. That’s one of the main reasons your money tree will grow slowly.
I included a picture of one of my 5-year old money trees to implore you to give it a year to strengthen up and get taller! If the light source does not cover the entire canopy, please make sure to rotate your tree bimonthly! It will help it fill out more evenly.
I let it grow a few suckers at the bottom, then I propagate those to make other money trees as gifts.
A lot of information says to let the money tree dry out completely. In my experience is, they don’t need to, I water when the moisture meter hits 4.
I also shake them every couple days to help keep them dusted. I bring him out in the rain when I can to further ensure the leaves are clean and soaking up as much energy as possible.
