Growing carrots in containers is an excellent way to enjoy fresh, homegrown produce, even if you have limited space. Here’s a simple guide to get you started:

Choose the Right Container: Select a container that is at least 12 inches deep to accommodate the carrot roots. It can be made of plastic, wood, or terracotta, as long as it has drainage holes to prevent waterlogging.

Pick the Proper Soil: Use loose, sandy, and well-draining soil. Carrots grow best in soil that is free of rocks and debris, which can cause the roots to fork or grow irregularly.

Select the Carrot Variety: Smaller or shorter carrot varieties, such as ‘Chantenay’ or ‘Thumbelina,’ are ideal for containers. However, longer varieties can also thrive if the container is deep enough.

Planting the Seeds: Sow carrot seeds directly into the soil, spacing them about 1–2 inches apart. Cover them lightly with soil, as they require minimal depth for germination. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.

Provide Ideal Growing Conditions: Place the container in a sunny spot where the carrots can receive 6–8 hours of sunlight per day. Carrots prefer cool temperatures, so aim to plant them in early spring or late summer.

Thin the Seedlings: Once the seedlings are about 2 inches tall, thin them out by removing weaker ones. This gives the remaining carrots enough space to grow to their full potential.

Water and Fertilize Regularly: Water the container consistently to keep the soil moist, especially during dry periods. Avoid overwatering. Fertilize with a balanced, low-nitrogen fertilizer every few weeks.

Harvesting: Depending on the variety, carrots are usually ready to harvest within 60–80 days. Gently pull them from the soil when they reach the desired size.

Growing carrots in containers is satisfying and straightforward, offering a sweet and crunchy reward for your efforts!

  2. Is there an alternative to Fish, Blood and Bone. I’ve used it before however my Boxer dog dug all my plants up due to the scent 😡😡😂😂 Thk uuuu x

  3. Wow Ivan, those carrots were amazing! I'd forgotten how lush your vegetables were last year. Looking forward to this year's videos 😊

  4. Thanks Ivan, those carrots looked brilliant, I think that I could do with looking at the local garden centres as I've seen other gardeners getting some very early seedlings up and running this year. Take care and all the best. Stevie

  5. Those carrots from last year looked fantastic. My soil is still too cold to sow carrots but fingers crossed by the end of the month, it will have dried out and warmed up a bit. I am also hoping for a much better summer than last year – the weather was so challenging. Gardeners are always optimistic that this growing year will be better than the last

  6. I've not seen any carrot plug plants where I live. I do like the idea of not having to constantly thin them out. Thank you Ivan. 👍🏻

  7. Those 2 trays although nice and well established have cost £6! That's a lot of bags of carrots. I agree the taste of home grown is far superior but I have to grow from seed to justify the costs. Hope you get good returns though 😊
