Growing potatoes in containers is a fantastic way to enjoy fresh, homegrown produce, even if you have limited garden space. Here’s how you can do it:

Choose the Right Container: Select a container that is at least 10-15 gallons in size with good drainage. Options like large pots, grow bags, or even repurposed buckets work well.

Pick the Right Potatoes: Opt for seed potatoes, as they are disease-free and specifically meant for planting. Early or mid-season varieties are excellent choices for container gardening.

Prepare the Soil: Use a nutrient-rich, well-draining potting mix. Mix in compost or a slow-release fertilizer to give your potatoes the nutrients they need to thrive.

Planting: Fill the container with about 6 inches of soil. Place your seed potatoes, with the eyes facing up, about 6 inches apart. Cover them with another 4 inches of soil.

Watering and Care: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Potatoes require good sunlight, so position your container in a sunny spot.

Hilling Up: As the potato plants grow, keep adding soil or mulch around the stems to cover all but the top leaves. This creates more space for the potatoes to develop underground.

Harvesting: After the plants flower and the foliage begins to yellow and die back, your potatoes are ready for harvest. Gently dig into the soil to retrieve your crop.

Container gardening is an accessible and rewarding way to grow potatoes, perfect for patios, balconies, or small gardens. The best part? You can easily move the containers to follow the sun or protect your crop from harsh weather. Ready to give it a go?

  1. Really informative video thanks. Got a few potatoes started in 10 gallon bags yesterday, if only id waited i would have taken the advice and knocked off some of the long white shoots growing. Might actually be worth lifting them out and doing that actually

  2. I chitted rocket and Charlotte and planted both out last week in containers, but I think I'll get more for putting out a bit later. Grew them for the first time last year and was quite successful with them, so thank you for the advice.

  3. I lost 5 buckets to Frost the other day. They was in the greenhouse. I should have covered them. I didn't know they would put new shoots out. I was going to throw them away tomorrow. I will keep hold of them now thanks for the advice.👍

  4. My Charlotte crop grew well from a few set-aside store-bought potatoes. It said the variety on the packet. Lovely clear video and process. Cheers.

  5. My seed potatoe order arrived way too early so my main crop have grown the long white legs so how can I slow the chitting process if I need to wait up to 6 weeks before planting or do I knock the white legs off and plant them now in containers unchitted?

  6. Good advice Ivan thank you this is my third year with potatoes. So far the Charlotte have done really well and I will try to stagger them this year to see how that goes. 👍

  7. Thanks Ivan, great info' for growing potatoes mate. Have a lovely week with some more sunshine. Take care and all the best. Stevie

  8. I started chitting 1st & 2nd earlies sharps express, charlottes end of Jan on window sill in conservatory, transferred dozen sharps express to small ex soup pots of compost early feb. On 10th March transferred to 3 x 30 litre containers (4 per container) when green stems were 4/5 inches tall. Leave containers outside day time, transfer and cover in shed over night. Then repeated same process using same ex soup pots with dozen Charlottes, no shoots showing yet.

  9. Brilliant. I'm going to try growing potatoes in containers for the first time this year. I've got some chitted up, so you've convinced me to plant them sooner rather than later and use fleece to protect them if necessary. Although I've got a garden full of soil, I'll also be doing carrots in raised beds as it seems to help against root fly.

  10. Thank for such a clear video, can i ask a silly question, i bought a mixed selection to grow, and like you said want to keep some for a later sowing, how would you store them till then. Thank you

  11. Thanks Ivan, I’ve been watching for a while now, just subbed. I really appreciate the advice and insight you provide. Happy gardening! 🧑‍🌾

  14. Thanks for your content Ivan 🙏🏻 I was new to growing last year and didn’t do that well, the lack of sun and late planting didn’t help. but excited to have a go this year. Can I use potatoes in my store cupboard? I have some motzart main crop potatoes from a local farm. Thought I’d just try and chit those or do they need to be seed potatoes? Thanks

  15. Great tips, Ivan 👍Just planted out my Charlotte second earlies yesterday. The growing season has officially started in my garden, so exciting! 🎉
