Join us as we switch termite food from grass to wood for a thriving colony, move hungry pigs to a new camp to escape the smell (thanks, Joel Salatin!), and transform abused land into a lush forest. From pig pen fixes to planting with the team, we share lessons, challenges, and birthday plans to employ 38 locals for a water harvesting project. Expect permaculture tips, team updates, and a shoutout to our amazing supporters!

  1. The soil beneath and around your water harvesting structures has been saturated with water in the past few months, so it will naturally take longer for the next rain to infiltrate.
What this means is that you already have massive amounts of water in the soil that will not just vanish in a week or two without rain.

There's something called "ghost ponds", and it's basically water that's trapped in some location.
This water can't go down nor sideways, because there's an impermeable rock or layer of hard clay around and beneath, so the water can stay in soil for years basically, since it won't evaporate from deeper layers.
Of course, if an area is well developed with vegetation, these plants will be using the water, but with your sparse vegetation it may as well last until the next rainy season next year in some parts of the property.

  2. I hope the big water harvesting structure will be some kind of pond/big hole so soak up the huge surplus of water you have on big downpours!
Cant wait to see what your up to 🙂

    Greetings from Sri Lanka 👋

  3. 01:45 You theoretically could keep pigs close to a house, but you would need TONS of mulching material that you add every day to keep the ground dry, the smell down and the flies away…

  4. You need wood chip that’s what’s Lacking for the pigs . And the farm , thicker deeper longer lasting mulch . 👍

  5. Might want to propagate some of the rosemary. It propagates the same way as the mint and basil.

  6. Simon is a slacker. And rules should be set, getting money only for work, not just for free.

  7. The scientific method: you did an experiment with grass, and next you'll do an experiment with wood and see whether you get more termites that way. Good for you!

  8. Prayers for Beshy.

I love seeing the butterflies. I agree that harvesting the seeds of the annual grass is key. You can throw it out the car window after a rain and maybe get it to seed along the road😁

I think your birthday idea is inspiring. That you have the capacity and love to help others is a bright star.

  9. Sorry to hear about Simon as he seems a good soul, sorry about Frits as he seems to have potential, hope they find their own best solutions. At the end of the day you have to build a team where everyone is happy and equal. Hoping for the best for Beshy. Thanks for another great video, talking about potjiekos made me homesick!

  10. About Simon: Are you crazy to pay workers for not showing up??? Doesn't even happen in the most advanced social standards (ie. Europe).
Never go above 10-20% of the local standards, or it will backfire at you somehow.
I even know this behaviour from the 2nd world (Thailand). 'Reliability' is not a very prominent part of their skill set 🙁
And Namibia is very much 3rd world, right?

  11. Mahahahaha! The day finally arrived… things are so green that you guys are getting lost? Yes Yes YES!!! Wahoo!!
    Happy tappy dancing feet!!! 🩰💕🖖🕺

  12. Instead of using buckets to harvest the termites why not just lay some wood in a pile, cover it with a sheet and then remove every couple or every day. This would allow the greatest surface area and hopefully more termites. The flat damp wood seems to attract them too i see.

  13. Need a tank and pump to retrieve that water from the river…………. Maybe we'll have that in place for the next rainy season.

  14. One thing that just occured to me, I had to come here and comment it under the latest video… What you're still missing is the diagnostic of the underground water levels under your land. People usually dig wells and thus they have a pretty good estimate of a level of of underground water. It's very easy to dig a tubular hole with a specialized machinery, takes 1 day of work to do it. Then you just insert a measuring device that can give you the exact water level information. This information could help you plan for the future or estimate the impact of your permaculture efforts. Please make a deep well soon, I am anxious to know how much treasure you have undergound after those rains!

  15. Mekon would appreciate us feeding Al Gore's rhythm, so let us all like. Share and please leave a comment even if it is the subscriber number ❤🎉

  16. I think the pigs should have an area that doesn't turn into mud, maybe use the Boulders and stones to pave a section of their pen and maybe put a larger roof .

  17. There's a design of a full metal hoe that's got a wide, but hollow handle, which curves slightly outward about 2 inches on a 45° angle about 6 inches from the wide metal end at the bottom to be more ergonomic. I believe it was welded together by someone. It's probably the easiest I've ever used and with the design and rubber gripped handle, you could swing it like a light version of a sledge hammer and lean backwards after it sunk in and it pulled up the ground so easily that it was honestly amazing.

  18. SP25-3-21: Büffel is a great character… or on the run or belly down in the mud… sadly to every pig comes its christmas.

Simon dug his own exit. Might be your kindness when he was ill spoiled his attitud. You might consider my uncle's advice with renters: "Never be too friendly or intimate, always keep some respectful distance and tension.
And your kickboxing sounds like masochism… you gave someone the points for little efford… but don't worry it is not for nothing. You strengthened yourself and got lessons for future competitions. What I like about such sport even if you are the point reserve for others. with only the condition ", intuition and reactions gained, it may save your health or life at some moment. Otherwise they will loose respect and try to take advantage on your friendliness." (on employees I had to learn that same lesson myself the hard way…. and sometimes its needed to be applied to the better half and own kids too, before you become the goose to gutt.)

  19. As for the grass, don't be afraid to spread it by hand. I've found that on my steep slopes it was well worth collecting wild seeds from the bottom and spreading them by hand at the top. Wish I'd done it years ago.

  20. Danou should be making bank from the advertising i have seen lately. So let them run if you have the time, make them pay for our time.

  21. its time to raise to rock dam 10-20 cm with some more rocks and sticks! and maby dont show it on youtube but make a chackdam in front of your land where no one can see it to slow the water even more as you said before the rainy season <3

  22. SP25-3-22:
Smells are indeed an indicator that something goes wrong. Use EM1 – eficiant Microorganisms = mainly lactobacteria to control smells, flies, mosquitos, speed up compost, heal animals, treat sewage water…..
