Hi! I’m in north Texas and this week the temperature really switched to summer. We were gone for a week and when I came back my ENTIRE lawn was covered in weeds.
This lawn is on a new build and so in total it is only like 18 months old. Never had weed issues like this. Unfortunately we are next to “undeveloped” land so we often have to fight weeds and pests from encroaching.
I am looking for the BEST tips to save my lawn. So far I’ve considered weed and feed, manual pulling, spray but I’m concerned about toxicity of the fertilizer. Also I’m wondering if some weed killer works better for some weeds and some works better for others.
Eventually once I clear the weeds I need to fertilize and level with sand but I’m pretty sure that should happen after (correct me if I’m wrong).
Thanks!!

Use any broadleaf herbicide. You can go to HD or Lowes and pick one up. Weed be gone is a good cheap option for this, but if you want to be proactive in the future then you may want to consider applications in the fall and spring yearly I use Nutrite Professional Turf Fertilizer .37%
No spray version: mow it at 4 inches tall every 7 days… EVERY SEVEN DAYS. Use a brand new sharp blade on the mower.
Spray version: Any over the counter lawn weed killer that comes in a hose end sprayer. Weed B gone, or Bayer. The stores local to you will have the correct product on the shelf. Then, Mow it 4 inches tall every seven days with a brand new sharp mower blade.
Many years ago I had an old woman give me “Scotts” brand lawncare booklet that was from pre WWII. Pre industrial chemical age… they recommended lime and fertilizer one time each month during the growing season and mowing regularly at 3.5 to 4 inches tall. It works.
The idea is to grow the turf so strong that weeds just aren’t able to compete.
Ahh I’ve fought this battle many times and still fighting.
I am in NTX also. Not saying my way is correct, but it has turned my yard from looking like yours and into something more respectable.
I throw weed and feed in the spring and fall.
I mow weekly or bi-weekly to encourage my Bermuda to grow and keep the weeds from looking too jungly.
I will pull them if I feel like it also.
It has taken 3 seasons to get my once new-build lawn in order. I use to get out there daily with a five gallon bucket and pull them. Eventually it got better.
Good luck and I am looking forward to the yard pro’s comments.
spectracide weed stop
ProDiamine. Then granular fertilizer. Then herbicide. Then 2-3 weeks later, herbicide again. Maaaaybe 3rd round 3 weeks after that, but likely only spot treating needed at that point
Should of used preemergent. But bunnies force will help!
Broadleaf herbicide. I use Tzone which has 4 different active ingredients: 2-4d, dicamba, sulfentrizone, and triclopyr. A lot of products have 2-4d and dicamba, but from what I’ve read triclopyr is really good against a lot of broadleaf weeds that may resist 2-4d and dicamba.
Obviously read the label for appropriate usage instructions and make sure it’s okay for your type of grass.
Pre emergent in the fall and early spring will stop this from happening. In the meantime spray it with weed b gon. That should get you some help with eliminating those current weeds. Mow it low so the bermuda will grow how it’s supposed to and choke anything else out
2,4,d to the rescue?
Soooo jealous. It started snowing again where I am right now.
I have this problem but much, much worse in my St Augustine lawn in ETX. Been hand pulling daily after work and on the weekends. It’s exhausting!
Time to go nolawn
All these *fuck ass weeds* on my *fuck ass lawn*. I’m committing to 15min of small weed pulling a day to keep them at bay. Mine looks very similar to yours.
