Good morning, Kaye. You look fresh and lovely today; your smile is like the rising Sun! I also learned a few new things about sweet potatoes!
Have you ever tried growing sweet potatoes without first growing and planting slips? After all, Mother Nature doesn't bother with that step. [We humans can't stop making things more difficult for ourselves.]All I've needed to do is nestle the chitted sweet potato in the ground so most of it is buried. I usually cut it in sections based on the number of chits and place them 4-6 inches apart from each other. Then cover the whole thing with several inches of dried leaves and or straw. as per the Ruth Stout method. I water it initially and then occasionally. They quickly grow a profuse amount of vining leaves and then plenty of potatoes follow. I use grow bags to make harvesting easier.
