  1. I'm about to start some small seeds like lettuce and carrots as a direct sow. Would you use vermiculite in direct sow as well? Thanks

  2. I purchased some vermiculite a month ago and it ended up being the non fine powder and I still used it but I have had mixed results so far. In the future I will make sure I only get the fine kind. Cheers from Ottawa, Canada🍁

  3. I've used perlite or sand to allow drying of the soil serface because fungus gnats are my biggest issue during germination. Will vermiculite keep those gnats out of my starts?

  4. Thank you for all you do for us. And I’ve been tossing around the idea of using seed time, but know that you have recommended it. I am definitely going to give it a go. Your opinions are very important to me. Because I know I can trust them and that’s a quality that you just can’t find find anywhere. Love ya Sir Luke.

  5. I dont know why people insist on using literal to mean figurative but for emphasis…

I get that the dictionary followed the common usage, but it just eliminates and/or damages an actual useful word…

    It isnt worth it.

  6. Interesting. Ill try it out but im a bit skeptical. I tried using seed starting mix recipe with it this year and the results were abysmal. Litterally all of my seed starts are dead. I had to start over. They either just didn't germinate. Or took weeks longer than normal. And then all died.

I usually get peppers to germinate in coco coir within days. Your mix it took them over 3 weeks. And then they died a few days after. I reset everything with the same seed packets with just straight coco coir no issues.

  7. I don't see the link for Seed Time in the description. Am I just missing it or is it not there 😅

  8. In 1 gallon:
    2 tbsp. Kelp
    Aminos – B1,2,3,6
    Eighth tsp. of Superthrive

could germinate a piece of Mastadon trunk in this solution and a week later a baby mastodon would pop out

  9. This might be a “stupid” question, but do you fill the cells first with soil and THEN top it off with vermiculite? Thank you! 😊

  10. I use leaves that have been pulverized into sand like consistency. Use a bucket w/lid and weed whip cut the lid to the center and cut out the divot in the middle. And you’ve got a leaf grinder that has a removable lid

  11. I've been using fine vermiculite on top of my seeds for a few years. Also helps not getting any mold on top too

  12. Vermiculite keeps the fungus gnats away too!! I start my seeds indoors and gnats can become a problem. I top all seeds with Vermiculite!!

  13. Tbh vermiculite at the top is the ONLY way I can get lettuce to germinate. Everyone says it's so easy and it hates me!!! haha. Also I have just had great luck with it in general, I've started buying huge bags of it and sifting it for superfine vermiculite almost-dust on the tops of my plugs and blocks (and they get WAY less prone to damping-off, too), and using the coarser stuff to mix into coco coir for seed starting. Great tip–it's always so nice when I have a good idea and try something, hoping I'm doing something right, and then see someone I respect doing the same!

  14. the best tip i got was for my egg plants and papers, for them too germinat, you need too have the soil a little warmer then tomatos, so put the pot in my greenhouse and i put plastic wrapper on top off them and i finaly got seedling, i made sure i bring them in the house at night time but when the germinat i leave them in the green house, i am talking about 3C at night outside so it is not that cold here and i day time it goes too 18C some times 20C soo it gets warm.

  15. Seed time looks interesting esp if affordable. I'll check it out later but I don't see a link in description in case yall forgot. Looks like exactly the technical aspect I need to add to my process if it works though.
