Appears to be a gigantic clump of staghorn ferns… except no leaves. Plenty of brown shield leaves though…
Where are you located? As far as I’m aware these cannot take freezes. I have a decent sized one (nowhere near this monster) and I’ll never let it get below 40°F.
They are epiphytic ferns that usually grow on trees but most people usually grow them in pots of loose material or ties to clumps of organic matter to hold moisture.
Have you ever seen it full of large, dark green leaves that look like large moose antlers?

I don’t know, but that’s so strange… Did you go over and ask your neighbor yet?

Dead Staghorn fern.

Fern or Rhododendron ball

This is something you see a lot in Florida… big old clump of staghorn ferns suspended from a tree branch. They are tropical plants though of course and don’t go dormant, this one is very much dead.
The idea of this person going through all the effort and expense of bringing a big staghorn home from Florida or wherever and hanging it from their tree in Oklahoma, and then expecting it to survive is actually hilarious though. Not sure what they were thinking, it really never stood a chance.

Engine swap. They gotta drop it into their lawn to get their trees back up and running.

It looks like a giant version of a poke root I dug up last fall

That’s a huge burl. An odd tree growth with intricate wood grain inside. The grain pattern is amazing when finished !

Can I just say how relieved I am that it’s a fern & not a huge wasp/hornet nest.
