We purchased this house and the yard leaves quite a bit to be desired. We don’t even know where to start. My husband wants to kill everything and start over but we are a little worried because we have two high energy dogs and need somewhere for them to go. His second thought was to just till the whole yard and plant grass seed. What do we do? We are willing to do most of the work ourselves.

  2. Kill the weeds first.

    Focus on nurturing what’s left.

    Make a plan for fall.

  3. I was in a similar position last year. I killed everything, tilled the dirt, got a soil test, installed irrigation, and planted seed. I also had 2 dogs.

I don’t see anything to save. If you want your future lawn to be weed free, you have to be very thorough about killing everything. Weeds will come back in the middle of your new lawn and be a pain to get rid of.

  4. At least you got plenty of wild onion to eat.

Also that looks like a dormant or dead warm season grass. Where is this exactly?

This is going to be a really great lawn come this time next year.

For now, focus on killing weeds and growing whatever grass is there. Get a broad leaf weed killer and spray the weeds.

In the fall, throw down some compost and sand to level the lawn a bit and spread good quality seed.

You’re going to get it done!
