Spring is the perfect time to start growing vegetables in containers, especially if space is limited or you don’t have access to a traditional garden. Container gardening is versatile, convenient, and can yield a surprisingly abundant harvest.

Choose containers with proper drainage holes to prevent waterlogging and ensure healthy root growth. Any container can work—terracotta pots, wooden boxes, or even upcycled items like buckets—as long as they are deep enough for the vegetables you want to grow. Use high-quality, nutrient-rich potting soil, as this provides a great start for your plants.

Vegetables like lettuce, spinach, radishes, carrots, and spring onions thrive in containers and are perfect for the cooler spring weather. Tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers can also be started in spring but may require support structures as they grow. Position the containers in a sunny spot, as most vegetables need at least 6-8 hours of sunlight daily.

Consistent watering is key, as containers tend to dry out faster than traditional garden beds. Adding mulch to the soil surface can help retain moisture. Feeding the plants with organic fertilizer every couple of weeks will provide them with essential nutrients for steady growth.

Container gardening is a rewarding activity that brings fresh, homegrown vegetables right to your doorstep, balcony, or patio. Plus, it’s a wonderful way to welcome the season of renewal. What veggies are you thinking of growing this spring?

  1. I love this channel. You provide wonderful info. And you share your failures as well as your successes which makes me feel better when things go wrong which they often do 😂

  2. I keep lolly sticks too! I gave too much time waiting for seeds to come through last year. Another lesson learned. I bought a lot of organic ones and lots didn't come through. I am trying heritage seeds this time.🙏🥕🌶🥦🧅

  3. As always great video.. Ivan have you ever tried long white Chinese radish . I got given seeds but never grown them before

  4. Speaking of re-using things, I'm experimenting with those Yakult type yoghurt mini pots. I've cut them so the top is a bit deeper than the base (about 2/3 to 1/3), and then turned the top upside down to make plug planters/seed trays. The neck/bottom of the pot is broad enough to pop the plug out easily when the time comes, and the bases turn into individual water trays. I've got beets multi-sown and spring onions multi-sown doing nicely so far. It's all systems go, despite the cold.

  5. Great you’ve got the water butt – I have a few connected to each other and last year I am sure it was the rainwater that made my flowers and salad stuff do so well. Delighted as my first of this year’s tomato seeds has germinated . Little things mean a lot to gardeners 😊

  6. Been really cold here this week, on & off rain today so couldn't get out if i wanted to so sown more seeds. Managed to get four runners planted from my strawberry plant last year & they're all looking great thank goodness so I'll probably put them in pots. Thanks Ivan ..

  7. I found a 260 litre collapsible waterbutt in Lidl. Easy to put together and doesn't take up much space with a diameter of just under 60 cm. Going to transfer the water from the shed roof fed waterbutt into there and hopefully will have plenty of rainwater through the summer.

  8. Thanks Ivan, it's been pretty changeable over the last week getting all four seasons in one day, but it is really just the border between winter and spring. Take care and all the best. Stevie
