Are there any trunking palms that have edible fruit that will survive in 8a? It would be awesome to have dates in my yard as part of an edible landscape
Excellent video! I’d like to add one more to ur list. The Mule Palm is a cross between a Pindo and a Queen; absolutely beautiful! We had snow and temps in the 20’s in Houston this year and my Mule Palm has zero damage. In fact, it’s started to flower lol. I hear they are hardy to around 15 F. Happy Spring 🌸
My tracicarp fortunei is slow growing. Only 3' tall after 17 years. How is yours so tall?
Texas sabal palm?
People often grow palms in the Seattle area (zone 8b) but I NEVER saw one growing up in SE New England
Those look great I have grown almost all of them in the foothills of NC just need a little protection in the winter like the citrus. Trust me when I say move that needle palm away from your house while you can still dig it up, they do get huge in time faster than you think put a citrus in there.
Thank you! Can you cover how you winterize your least cold hardy plants? I am in Michigan I tried japanese bananas but I dont think they made it. We will see but I am not hopeful lol.
I knew I heard a little Philly in your accent! Thanks for the informative video.
Finally something cool for zone 6!!!❤
Thanks! I had a beautiful queen palm in my front yard in Southern California.
But since they don't survive well in the Phoenix area, I planted pigmy palms here.
I’ve been waiting for this
Palm in CO? I might as well give that a shot to
Great video and informative content as always following your channel. A lil stretch from gardening plants that feed you. However, beautiful palms and peaceful plants that bring relaxation also feed the body and mind. ❤
Love your channel. Thanks!!
Thank you for doing this.I've been very curious what the palm tree was in a house yard near me
I'm curious why you grow so many type of palms, do you harvest the fruits? Extract sugar?
great info will be planting some
lol lick lick lick yummy
Can they handle hurricane force winds? My issue is one growing tall and getting knocked down from a hurricane.
In Houston area we never put tarps directly on any plants. Cloth first. Then a tarp. Plastic burns the plants when it freezes. FYI. Great info.
I guess Dallas -Ft Worth has many palm trees, that is something!!
We have a Washingtonia robusta in Nothern Georgia. It came with the house we bought in 2021, already full grown. I lived in Southern CA for many years and these palms are very common there. Since I have lived here in got down to 7 degrees Fahrenheit. Nothing happened. I have never seen one in this area but very happy to own one that thrives. In SoCal they like to strip the outer coating on the trunk. I think I will leave it on.
Here in Jackson County GA there are bunches of Windmill Palms planted all around. Also some Pindo Palms and Palmettos.
I need some Jelly Palms in Pennsylvania
I’m in British Colombia and I kinda want a needle palm I see a lot of windmill around Vancouver very gorgeous but I never thought to get one 😂 maybe this summer
Awesome! TY XXxxXX
What fertilizers do you recommend for palms? Maybe another video idea! Love the channel! Thanks
I recently researched this and found only 2 trees and 2 bushes, so this video was right on time
Did you ever get any dates from the canary island?
A bit off topic. I purchased a self fertile strawberry guava will it pollinate my pineapple guava if it's not self fertile. Thanks in advance
This was a great overview MG. I really enjoy these videos where you highlight more uncommon plants and edibles. What other gardening channel is covering palms? It’s great to see someone else experimenting with exotic plants like your date palms. I’m a 45 min drive south of you and successfully grow starfruits, ice cream bean, jaboticaba.
You can really dive deeper into this video and expand on the botanical differences of the palms since they are so much a like.
You missed a “palm” in your video. It’s a cycad but the sago palm! Many Polynesian people eat the center of it
Alas, not one of these palms would survive our zone 5 that reaches sub -10F every year. We can only grow these indoors or in a heated greenhouse. But they are beautiful.
I grow Sabal minors and needle palms And all sorts of hardy tropicals here in zone 7a Pennsylvania And they do great!
I field grow in my nursery Trachycarpus and chamaerops. I have one acre of them. Started in 1998. I sell 3-4 a year to pay property taxes. Palms are a great long term investment.
Hello,
Thank you for the beautiful video 👍
I live in Germany and also have a lot of palm trees.
Best regards
Peter 🌴
I was looking into planting some palm trees in my front yard but didn’t know much about them. Well, now I do and thanks to you. Would you please tell where to get these trees at a reasonable price and trusted sources? Thanks!
Can you grow them in canada
Great video! I’m glad you have so many palms. You might consider the box method for your date palms, but your method seems to be working well. 😀🌴🌴🌴🌴
i used to grow a couple mexican fan palms here in oklahoma. one got to 15 feet before I could wrap it up anymore and it finally died. Sabal minor and needle palms do really well for me
Have you tried the Elephant ear fig?
Hmmm. I am zone 6b, southern Missouri. We sometimes–not always, but sometimes can get -20F here, plus windchills. Now, if coconut palms or date palms grew here…
why would you grow palms never thought ever see a vid on growing them and not getting rid of them? WHY?
Please send this to The Beach House restaurant in Port Dover, Ontario, Canada. Zone 6b. They spend a fortune every year bringing in palm trees for looks, that they chop down every winter. 🤦🏼♀️😕 I think it’s ridiculous. They’d be better to put native shade trees suitable for the area.
Great and fascinating video!
❤️
Just planted my family Yucca Palm outdoors here in Graham NC! Shes an established 5 year old palm over 7 ft tall, hoping she thrives in my red clay acre lot which ive amended ofc. Lord willing I pray for success!!
I never knew these palm trees were cold tolerant. Your dinner looked so delicious. Mr. Dale loves it, too. Thank you for sharing your video.
