Buffalo, New York. Snow finally all melted and I have a ton of these weird large areas where the grass is discolored, practically white, and appears very matted down. Kind of hard and crunchy also.
Any ideas what this could be? Some sort of fungus?

Potentially frost mould.
Snow mold, just rake it out it will recover, stand up the leaf blades to get air underneath them and maybe a fertilizer bump to stimulate growth
My yard was littered with this. Raked it up to break up the clumps and put down some step 1. Fingers crossed.
