Honestly, I wouldn't mind if once a week, you peppered in rereleased old videos in addition to these ones. I feel like I get useful information each year, but I forget between years
Hey Luke, any thoughts about winter sowing onion seeds? I tried onions from seed last year & I had really good results multi-sowing but I also had really bad results after transplanting them. I didn't buy any this year but I'm pondering if I could try a different tack on the issue next year. I know the ramps are springing out of the ground as I write this – are most onions as cold tolerant?
Right on time, as I’m considering venturing into bulking onion & shallot territory! Currently doing leek, bunching onion, and garlic, and all I knew about the flower issue was as relates to hardneck garlic – when you see the scape, cut it off. Does the same rule work for bulbing onion? Or is the onion just a loss when that flower shows up?
Was so happy when I purchased my onions from you that you identified which one were long days, which I needed. They all came up and are ready for their first haircut.
I'm definitely in the long day onion territory and grow varieties for that. However, we fell in love with Maui onions and although they are short day onions, I can grow them here in northern New Hampshire. They do bulb, but they are small, like the size of a large shallot. Point is, it doesn't hurt to try – you never know till you know!
I had about 6 flower last year, the first time it ever happened to me. I tried seeds this year, but not sure what I'm going to get. They are looking like they are shriveled….and dry.
I struggle with onions. I do both seeds and sets. I love growing onions and using them for cooking. So i want to grow a lot of them. But ugh. Its something ive struggled with.
Seedlings tend to die off too easily. So i supplement with sets. But like Luke mentions. A percentage of those go to flower.
Then.. getting them to bulb at all is hard. Ive gotten better at these things as time goes on. But i still harvest only a small percentage of onions i start and plant. At this point id rather throw a lot of resources at the problems so that i get some onions.
Thank you!!!! I was researching/asking gardener friends how to avoid the problems I had growing alliums last year, so you provided this video at a perfect time!
Re: high-nitrogen fertilizers, is there a specific brand or type (like fish emulsion, bone meal/blood meal, or other) that will provide the highest N value?
Thanks so much. BTW – I really like your YT channel and am a subscriber as well as MIGardener customer. I'm looking forward to receiving an order any day now😊.
Can you touch on planting bunching onions? I’m not sure if I’m supposed to plant them all together in a clump or separate them like I do for bulbing onions….
But I’ve always had this question about onions- if you grow your onion seedlings indoors with more light per day than what is natural, and then you plant them outside during a shorter duration per day of sun, does that mess up when they signal to produce their bulb? I’ve never had much luck with onions and am wondering if this could be the case. Thanks again for all your info!
Mate I love your work, however that whole latitude north/south is confusing AF for anyone not in the USA. Why not just say something like… Short day onions can grow with up to x hours sunlight. Long day onions can grow with more than x hours sunlight. BTW… Is that… winter short/long days? Or summer short/long days?
Last year i planted onion sets but they all rotted i think i planted them too deep but my brother planted same sets in his garden and they were fine but his were planted like irises without a lot of dirt on them. This year i planted them a lot shallower so hopefully i will get good results this time. I planted ones that my garden center had i think they are short day ones. I've never tried growing from seed before
Mine are starting to bulb up. I always start from seed. For some reason this year about half look like they will be monster sized, but the other half are pretty small still. I think it was the wonky temp fluctuations in Fl this year. And we actually got 8 inches of snow which was wild. Onions are one of my favorites to grow but they just take so long, like garlic.
I have used onion sets for over 40 years. They grow very well in zone 3b. Grow my bunching onions in my greenhouse. I very rarely have an onion bloom. Just how my garden works. Always have beautiful big onions that last all winter. Yellow Dutch is my preference, there are red onions, white onions and shallots that are available in our area.
Here's a question that just popped into my mind with respect to the sets vs seeds… What if one planted seeds and had an amazing harvest with beautiful, large bulbs and then decides to use some of the large bulbs as sets for the next year's garden – would those large bulbs become even bigger??? Obviously (due to their bi-annual nature), they will most likely go to flower, but they could be used during the next Spring/Summer's meal preps prior to them going to flower… Inquiring minds would like to know.

Out in the garden, taking off some of the heavy mulch, I put on my asparagus beds for winter then I’ll be fertilizing
Boo yahhh first comment ❤
I needed this, thanks for sharing.
Thanks. I learned a lot
Thanks for clearing up the long day short day, intermediate day onions, needed the refresher!
Planted 100 sets last year and about 1/3 went to flower, harvested small to med size onions from all
I watch and pluck the bud off, well before flowering
Great video. I appreciate your advice. Thank you. 🙏🇺🇲✌️😎
Also, we often don't know the variety when purchasing onion sets.
Thank you
#Migardener What intermediate day bulbing onions do you sell?
Nice work

Do you recommend continually trimming the tops of your onions as they grow through the whole growing season? If so, why?

How long in hours should long day onions seedlings get under lights for transplants?
I always use plants wide variety and very successful , seeds to diffacult.
Do you harden onions off
Love your videos immensely… just 2 onion questions…
Can I still plant bulb onions this weekend in MI zone 6b?
Should I soak the seeds before planting?
Last year i lost all of my onion seedlings. This year they look great though. I did multi sow.
Is Bunching Onions and Scallions the same thing?

I can grow decent yellow and white onions. Why do my red onions always end up much smaller?
Just looked up my latitude and it's 36.767 degrees N.
Thank You!
I am an epic onion growing failure😂. I don't stop trying though, and with this knowledge, I WILL try again. Thank you for this information!
Dangit! I ordered the wrong kind 😭
Wanting to see progress on the new property. Period.
How do I keep my dogs from digging them up? Dog chops with sautéed onions? JK I cant grow onions because of my dogs.
Luke- thank you for all your videos!
