Or is it saveable? My front yard is getting embarrassing 🙈. (Southwest facing, full sun, USDA hardiness zone 9a)
Would you kill it all and start over?
Or is there something I can do to salvage this mess? I’m pretty clueless with lawn care, so any advice would be so appreciated.
Thank you!

You could go either way and it would likely be the same amount of work. If you are willing to invest in sod or seed, might be better to replace completely with a turf cutter. If you decided to keep what you have, you may need selective herbicide and some decompaction/topdressing.
My lawn starts out green and robust every spring then by mid-June it looks just like this. I’ve nuked it, dethactched, scarified, added chemicals, fertilizers, hired Virginia Green, aerated and raked out the plugs. I think the soil is just dead. I am going to try something new this summer. I just bought a small auger. I’m going to drill holes and fill them with good shit… peat moss, coconut shredding, compost, worm castings, maybe some sand. I’m going to add worms to each hole. Hopefully we can revitalize that whole area from under the soil and breathe some life back into it.
Moss-out, aerate, overseed and fertilize
