Rosanne and i discuss my plans to completely overhaul my backyard this Spring. My current backyard garden is a sandpit and in need of a rework. I want to increase its beauty but also function by introducing elements of the Northwoods. Sounds interesting?

  1. For sound, I love water bubbling out of stone.
Also, grasses can make a lovely sound. And those birds, such as chickadees, are also a lovely sound.

  3. Research your pines carefully. In my experience, a white pine can become extremely outsized very quickly. I had one in my backyard that had branches twenty feet long that spanned my entire backyard. They cast needles 10 months out of the year and dripped sap the other two, ruining laundry, tents, walkways, etc. (Mohawk Valley in Central New York.)

  4. Nathaniel, you are a very good storyteller. I love how you learned to accept the extreme climate environment, and I particularly love your approach to gardening that involves the senses! I never thought of it, so I'm going to try to incorporate that as my own garden grows. It's pretty cool how you're already inspiring others!

  5. When you first mentioned Northwoods themed garden I immediately thought of pines , birches or aspens, granite boulders, and a babbling creek, native ferns, wildflowers like ladyslippers, ( our state flower)and of course logs or log features. Check out the Nature Play Area at Frontenac State Park near Redwing where there is a wonderful childrens play area made from natural materials like stumps and logs, and even a T-pee framed structure. Love the idea of incorporating native shrubs like American cranberry bush. Viburnums have beautiful fall color as well.

  6. Interesting to hear about your plans and ideas for your new garden, Nathanial. Wish you the best. Loved the suggestions for plants and trees from you, Rosanne. My only comment about this video is the length of it. What I loved about Rosanne’s Garden was the short, topic based videos packed with gardening information and beautiful photos to illustrate concepts. This one was a bit too long for my taste.

  7. Hi friends! Although spread, I didn't hear Lambs Ear mentioned for touch. Could line pathway. I'm with Roseanne, leaning towards stones for sitting around fire pit, but it is yours to decide, Nathaniel. Birdhouses and feeders a must! Isn't it cold enough without a cold plunge? 😵 Pines, yes! I personally love Arborvitaes too. You may be looking from more of a landscaped perspective Nathaniel, with some potted flowers here and there. I had to take a break during long video to go eat 😂! Nice conversation, with Roseanne 🌷 included! ❤

  8. Hellabores (lenten rose) for another hardy flowering perennial. Zone 4. Shade, partly sun. Tough and long lasting beauties.
