Hi, we’re new homeowners. This is not a new development, but most of the trees on the property were lost in a hurricane a few years ago. We’re in zone 9a, sw Louisiana, everything here is flat. We do not have gutters draining water into our yard. Our yard stays squishy, or when it’s on the drier side, it never feels very firm. We just installed a privacy fence and we didn’t have to add water to the post holes for concrete because it was full of water on its own, if that gives you any idea of how much water sticks around.
What is the best more affordable fix? I’ve been researching but I see so many different options I’m not sure what is the best option to take or apply to our yard.
No clay here. I see French drains and rain gardens when I google, but then I read not to install French drains. Thanks.

That is…an insane amount of water. Are the neighboring properties similar in water retention?
I don’t deal with drainage issues much, but core aeration followed dumping down a bunch of sand and then dragging it around the yard to fill the holes can help with drainage.
It sounds like you need a lot more than that, though. Hopefully someone else can help.
