This is just a grocery store onion. I've never seen one do this before! Curious if it would grow if I planted it?

The tops will grow, you’ll get onion scapes. If you let it flower, you’ll get seeds to start new onions. You won’t get new bulbs out of this one, but you will if you plant it’s seeds

  2. Yes, but it will instead feed off of the bulb and grow a flower. You can harvest the seeds and grow hundreds of new onions from them!

The flowers are very beneficial in the garden (for pollinators and as a not-terribly-effective deer repellent. I plant old bulbs as companion plants throughout the garden.

Looks like it already started without you! 🤣

*(Everyone already gave you an actual answer/advice, so thought it was cool to bring the jokes)*
