  2. Question Im ordering soil and compost from patuxent nursery.. Do i really need the soil or can i add in some peat and vermiculite to the compost and plant in that? i was thinking of ordering 2 yards of compost and 1 yard of soil, is that a good enough mixture?

  3. Can I ask you a question that’s a little off topic? Would buying a filter for your garden hose be a good idea if you are on city water that has a lot of chlorine? I heard that tap water with a lot of chlorine can kill off some of the good bacteria in your soil. My tap water smells and tastes like it comes from a salty, swimming pool, we don’t drink it. Someone on Reddit said that buying one of those hose filters that RVer’s use will help keep your plants happy and healthy. I was just wondering what your opinion was because I trust your judgement on all things gardening related. Thank you! 🙂

  4. Thanks! I often mix peat moss, perlite (or vermiculite), worm castings, and compost. The compost might be homemade, bagged mushroom compost, or bagged aged steer manure compost.
I then use an organic fertilizer.

  5. Never buy bagged! Only peat moss. Mostlikely ur local nursery has compost piles ready to sell that is 3x less expensive. Look around your area.

  6. Hey Gary, im so sorry to ask, i dont see the link you said would be in yhe description for your soil making video. I know you have a few videos, over the years, which one do you recommend now? Also bonnie had a good soil mix but they got bought out.

  7. Watch what happened to the couple on Homestead Heart last year. They lost their first plantings because of contaminated product.

  8. Thanks for the education Gary😃👍🏾 I have both peat and cocoa coir. I'm working on making my own soil with leaves and wood chips and coffee grounds with a trail of urine and coffee as fertilizers. As well as grinding up egg shells and my own bones and sea shells.

  9. I've watched a few of your fertilizer videos and noticed that you focus on the price per pound rather than the NPK content per pound. Wouldn't it make more sense to compare the cost based on nutrient concentration? For example, paying $20 for 5 lbs of 10-10-10 seems cheaper than paying $10 for 5 lbs of 4-4-4.

  10. Home Depot sells a 27 lb bag of Holly-tone for $25, that's $4 less than Garden-tone. Both have similar ingredients, but Garden-tone is 3-4-4 with 2% sulfur, while Holly-tone is 4-3-4 with 5% sulfur. Would the extra sulfur affect the pH of my vegetable garden?

  11. Feather meal and poultry manure I think are ingredients I want to stay away from unless they are adequately heated to destroy viruses.

  12. Gary, In a prior video, maybe a live Q&A, you mentioned a website that pairs homeowners in need of soil with companies removing topsoil. I cannot find that video now. Can you tell us the name of that website again please?

  13. Bought a 25 pound of Coop-gro (3-3-4 NPK, pelletized chicken manure) a couple weeks back at Tractor Supply. $19.79 shipped after tax

  14. A GREAT video! It is SO HELPFUL to have the breakdown of each topic covered! in your notes below. You show great respect for our time and energy. Thanks!
