This was really hard to film in the shadows of the understory. Hopefully it can seen well enough to help. Thanks for watching!
I’ll be pruning mine come winter 🇦🇺. Thanks for all the info
I have always been nervous to prune Japanese Maples. Thank you sooo much for this FANTASTIC lesson!

I have several Japanese maples and I’m never sure how to prune them, this was very helpful. 💚
Loved this!!❤
Great video! Very helpful since I am new to the maples. Purchased small Bloodgood last year and snaked the trunk (per your inspiration). Question: should I rub off the buds forming on the "snake" part or let them leaf out and prune them later? I live in NE Ohio zone 6. Have learned so much. Thanks to you and Steph for all you do!
This was so timely and helpful, as I have one Japanese maple that really needs shaping.
This was a great lesson in pruning, looking forward to seeing the garden when the maples leave out. Thank you Jim & Lynn and Jim & Stef.
very helpful video! thanks Jim, Steph & the Swansons!
Love this! I would love the name of those tools😊
Beautiful property. I immediately knew this was a garden revisit and worth a rewatch.
“One of my favorite garden tours ever” from July 2022
I use the pruning tar all the time for pruning during the growing season. It is the only thing that will prevent borers from getting into a fresh cut. It's not necessary if it's cold enough.
thank you for this!
Fantastic video.
Honestly, you've got some timing, I've just pruned back my acers.. now I'm going to watch this to learn how to do it right 😂 I'm so nervous, thanks for the video😅 so excited !
Wonderful video, any chance we could get links to those long handled tree pruning tools?
Hi Jim. Great video! I love Japanese maple. I have a few in my own garden & this content was super helpful! TY ❤
Excellent video and thank you to the Swansons! Thank you for the detials for the weeper especially.
Wonderful video!!❤ can’t wait to see this garden again in April!
Thanks to all!
Thanks for the reminder to prune them!
Thank you for the wonderful content! I did not realize you could easily take off the dried leaves from weeping Japanese maples. After watching your YouTube, I went out and did that to my two weeping maples and then was able to prune it the way I liked. Thank you so much. I always enjoy your content!
Love this video! So helpful for me as I prune most of my friends' Japanese maples for them.
These could be upright or weeping forms. Pruning is my favorite gardening task. I also love rejuvenating shrubs that have been "pruned" by landscaping companies using motorized hedge trimmers… and the weepers with the "bowl" cuts. For me, pruning combines the technical with the artistic.
Two very smart Jims. Stand back and let Lynn do her thing. She is a very concise communicator. Excellent video, and while it was alluded to, Japanese maples are not dainty and fragile trees as many expect.
Such a helpful video! Thank you! Shadows and all, I get it 😀. Pruning is a lot of fun.
great video. It will be neat to see their collection at leaf-out
