Tree root crossing sidewalk into lawn, is it sucking nutrients? If so, will cutting it with a saw be enough?

That is pretty cool…and it could suck some nutrients, but I don’t think would be a concern/

For me it would the root growing thicker and eventually breaking that cement.

I would cut it remove it as much as I could.. It won’t kill the tree.

Plants don’t really “suck nutrients” very well. Nutrients dissolve into the water, and plants absorb water via capillary motion.

There’s way more surface area made up of grass roots than tree root in your lawn. Trees kill grass by blocking light and covering up the surface with leaves or needles etc. It’s not from stealing nutrients, as on the surface level, grasses are more efficient at pulling water(and thus nutrients) from the soil.

That’s just a natural expansion joint

Not enough to make a difference, but I’d be more worried about the sidewalk eventually buckling.

Cut it. The root will die and the tree will live.

This is the physical embodiment of the phrase “life, uh, finds a way”

Just leave it alone. The grass will out compete it, and it will probably die by itself. Plus plants regularly share nutrients between them anyway.

What an insane thing to be worried about. Honestly fuck this entire sub, it’s so bad for water quality what you all promote

Cut that tree root before it damages your walk.
