i found this broken off piece in a nursery. the guy that worked there said i could have it for free. he said not to propagate it in water and to use a rooting hormone which i got. just asking for advice on a soil mixture and how exactly to go about this.

This is an agleonema, not a philodendron.
If there are little nodes / small bud looking things on the bottom of that stem, you can place the cutting in water and it’ll grow new roots
i would personally put in something like mollys houseplant soil or a diy mix similar if you want to go the soil route, i usually do all my props in water first

Why would he say not to propagate in water? Strange.
I’m propping an aglaonema in water right now. Just be patient and remember to switch out water once a week.
