Hello! I’m in Northern California Zone 9. Seeking advice on what’s best to do to our yard. Last summer the lawn was brown (or dead?) Over the winter, it regrew in patches and along with it were weeds. Should we redo everything with new sod? Or can we save this? If it’s the latter, what steps do we need to take? Thank you so much.

no point in sod if you plan to neglect it again.
maybe consider irrigation before putting a dime into anything
I definitely agree with the irrigation, but I don’t know if I would redo it with so you really could just grow your own grass. It’s far cheaper and it doesn’t look like that big of a space you could do it yourself with some loom and a wheelbarrow and shovel and rake with some grass seed and hay. I’ve been a landscaper for 10+ years I do this stuff all the time it’s way easier than it sounds
This is a cool seasons grass growing in a very warm season area. It will always die or at least severely struggle in the summer without a ridiculous amount of irrigation.
Sod it with bermuda or another drought tolerant warm season grass. Installing permanent irrigation would be a huge benefit, but you could probably get away with an oscillating sprinkler or non-permanent automated system for that size area. It will need a lot more water the first year or two compared to the following
For irrigation you can do a lot with [this](https://www.amazon.com/Melnor-73280-Digital-Water-Electronic/dp/B0748MN8V8/ref=mp_s_a_1_1_pp?crid=18MU2WXFM7SQB&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.lI8owwVZQ_SoqZqL3Xs2AhxCMUiTlFoV2_AyTysAth458sGJrTppU6vppMT6W8kPVtm-w6gkELgg7M-1Y6c1dpkV1PykcSihi9zcFqLzlGzHQ6WBbcPtUnWigBMw1x0b1ASb1Pk-h-sgGR8OAE4xEt7K8IJCxrVOQ_WnSfPV5mvNXOv3F_FKWKfdRyq9U6kBcXy_dpb1CksVDR1dd5Ytug.0ieyj0gXtErCsqijamL-acAbGcBiVWt5wtf1_uSu_Ko&dib_tag=se&keywords=automatic+sprinkler+timer&qid=1740796471&sprefix=automatic+sprinkler+timer%2Caps%2C145&sr=8-1). This is where I started with my lawn they had never been cared for at all. It wasn’t as bad as yours but it’s worth a try.
Yeah looks great!
The tribbles have taken over

That is another reason I like bermuda. You got a hole, it will grow and covers it. Most cold season grass you need to regrow and patch. If you can go bermuda.
Well I think I can safely assume the soil needs to be aerated. It’s never too late but you got your work cut out
Thank you Everyone for your helpful insights. I appreciate it.
There’s no grass left, it’s all weeds. Hit it with some glyphosate a couple of times, aerate the soil with a tiller and start again
